Several people have been injured after violent clashes linked to a Libyan league football match spiralled into street protests that reached the heart of Tripoli. The unrest began during a high-stakes game between Tripoli’s Al-Ittihad and Misrata’s Swehly at Tarhuna Stadium, about 65 kilometres southeast of the capital.
Tensions flared in the 87th minute when the referee rejected loud penalty appeals from Al-Ittihad players and fans. Enraged supporters stormed the pitch, triggering chaotic scenes in which stadium property was vandalised and security personnel and guards sustained injuries.
Local media and eyewitnesses reported that a broadcast van belonging to Libya Sport TV, several security vehicles and parts of the stadium infrastructure were set on fire. Images shared on social media showed wounded guards being rushed to hospital with head, leg and arm injuries as security forces fired shots into the air to disperse rioters.
The violence later spread to Tripoli, where groups of angry Al-Ittihad fans marched towards the headquarters of the Government of National Unity (GNU) on Al-Sikka Road. Protesters set off fireworks and other incendiary devices, igniting the facade and gardens of the prime minister’s office complex and sending thick black smoke into the sky.
Firefighters and GNU security units were eventually deployed to bring the blaze under control and secure the compound. While authorities have yet to release an official casualty figure for the Tripoli incidents, reports point to significant material damage and multiple injuries among security personnel.
The unrest has reignited concerns about security around football in Libya and the way sporting grievances can quickly escalate into broader anti-government protests in the politically fragile North African nation.

Lower patience contributes to strain in modern marriages – BBNaija Tochi
Big Brother Naija star Tochi has said that lower levels of patience, tolerance and endurance among today’s couples are a major reason many modern marriages are under intense strain. Sharing his views on Instagram, he argued that people of this generation “don’t have the same level of tolerance, patience and endurance our mothers and fathers had.” According to him, many young spouses are now “too woke”, quick to walk away from relationships rather than work through challenges and sacrifices that previous generations accepted as part of marriage. He noted that this mindset, combined with social media pressure and changing values, has made it harder for couples to stay committed when problems arise. Tochi suggested that modern marriages should even operate more like formal contracts, where partners understand clearly the weight of the vows they are taking. In his view, if […]

Man City battle fatigue ahead of FA Cup final clash with troubled Chelsea
Pep Guardiola says Manchester City are battling mounting fatigue as they prepare to face a troubled Chelsea side in Saturday’s FA Cup final at Wembley. City are chasing a domestic cup double while still locked in a tight Premier League title race with Arsenal, leaving the squad stretched by a relentless schedule. Guardiola’s men were in league action as recently as Wednesday, when they beat Crystal Palace 3–0 to close the gap on Arsenal to two points with two games remaining. In contrast, Chelsea have had a full week to rest and train at Cobham, a gap the City boss believes could hand the London club a physical edge at Wembley. “After the FA Cup, we have Bournemouth, we play every three days. Chelsea have a week at home training, preparing the final,” Guardiola said. “We have to travel to […]

Hotels Await World Cup Booking Surge
Hotels across several host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are reporting weaker-than-expected bookings despite growing public excitement ahead of the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico. In cities such as Houston, Miami, Kansas City and New York, World Cup advertising and merchandise have become increasingly visible as preparations intensify for the competition. However, many hotel operators say the anticipated surge in reservations has yet to materialize. According to the American Hotel and Lodging Association, a large number of hotels in host cities are currently recording lower booking levels compared to the same period last year. Several hotel owners and managers told the BBC they expected significantly stronger demand months before the tournament begins. Deidre Mathis, owner of the Wanderstay Boutique Hotel in Houston, said her establishment remains far below projected occupancy levels despite being located near […]

World Cup Final to Feature Historic Show
The 2026 FIFA World Cup final will feature a major half-time entertainment show for the first time in the tournament’s history, as organisers prepare for a global spectacle at the championship match in New Jersey on 19 July. The tournament will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. According to reports, the half-time performance is expected to last around 11 minutes, although earlier speculation suggested it could run beyond the traditional 15-minute interval allowed under football regulations. Last year’s Club World Cup final between Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain featured a half-time show that lasted more than 24 minutes. While pre-match entertainment has become common at major football events such as the UEFA Champions League final, this will mark the first official half-time show ever staged during a FIFA World Cup final. Among the artists linked to the […]
