Alabaster Box Threatens to Sue Medikal Over “Welcome to Africa” Copyright Dispute

Article arrow_drop_down

Ghanaian gospel group Alabaster Box has issued a legal threat against rapper Medikal over alleged copyright infringement concerning his latest track, “Welcome to Africa.” The group, known for their vocal harmonies and hit song “Akwaaba,” claims that Medikal unlawfully sampled their work without permission.

Represented by Sustineri Attorneys, Alabaster Box alleges that the opening of Medikal’s track closely mirrors the composition of Akwaaba, creating what they describe as a derivative work that infringes on their exclusive rights.

They argue that the similarities—paired with Medikal’s likely familiarity with their music—suggest the act was not accidental. Their legal notice outlines that “Welcome to Africa” has already gained notable attention, with over 72,000 views on Medikal’s verified YouTube channel, and has been actively promoted across digital and traditional platforms.

The group is demanding the immediate removal of the song from all media, an end to any public performances or promotions, and a full disclosure of agreements and earnings related to the song. If their demands aren’t met, they’re prepared to take the matter to court—seeking an injunction and financial damages.

Alabaster Box emphasized their commitment to protecting their creative works and preserving their reputation as pioneers in Ghana’s music scene.
