Sports Minister Mourns Tragic Passing of Nigerian Boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju

Ghana’s Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, has expressed his deep sorrow and condolences following the sudden death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju. Olanrewaju passed away after competing in an eight-round international light-heavyweight bout against Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

In a statement released on April 1, 2025, the minister extended his sympathies to Gabriel’s family, friends, the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBC), and the broader boxing community worldwide. The Ministry also assured full cooperation with the Ghana Boxing Authority to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death and to implement measures to enhance athlete safety.

While the cause of death is yet to be confirmed pending a medical report, the ministry expressed its commitment to ensuring that safety protocols in boxing are strengthened. Minister Adams concluded his statement by wishing peace for Gabriel’s soul and calling for unity among all involved during this challenging time.
