Mahama Appoints Brigadier General William Agyapong as New Chief of Defence Staff

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Brigadier General William Agyapong as the new Acting Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Ghana Armed Forces. The appointment, effective from March 24, 2025, replaces Lieutenant General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, who served in the role since February 1, 2024.

The change is part of a broader reshuffle in the military’s leadership, which includes key appointments for other top positions within the armed forces. Brigadier General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu has been appointed Acting Chief of Army Staff, while Commodore Godwin Livinus Bessing takes over as Acting Chief of Naval Staff. Air Commodore Eric Agyen-Frempong has been appointed Acting Chief of Air Staff, and Brigadier General Glover Ashong Annan will serve as the Acting Chief of Staff.

These shifts in military leadership come after consultations between President Mahama and the outgoing Service Chiefs. Mahama expressed gratitude to Lieutenant General Oppong-Peprah for his service, acknowledging his contributions to national and regional security during his tenure.

The new appointments are expected to play a pivotal role in addressing evolving security challenges in the country. The changes will help steer the Ghana Armed Forces through future security concerns under the leadership of Brigadier General Agyapong and the newly appointed military heads.
