The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has announced plans to take legal action against individuals and businesses involved in the open burning of hazardous waste, particularly electronic waste (e-waste). The EPA’s CEO, Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse, emphasized that such practices pose serious environmental and health risks.
Speaking at a meeting with the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council and local government authorities, she revealed that the EPA, in collaboration with the Attorney-General’s Office, has developed a prosecution guide to enforce penalties. The law prohibits open burning of hazardous waste and imposes fines of 2,500 penalty units for individuals and 10,000 for corporate offenders.
Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Akweley Ocloo expressed support for the initiative, stressing the need for collaborative efforts to curb pollution and ensure a cleaner environment.
