Former Youth and Sports Minister, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has called for Ghana’s iconic boxers to be honored with statues, instead of outgoing President Akufo-Addo, who recently unveiled a statue of himself. Speaking in Parliament, Vanderpuye argued that legends like Eddie Blay, Prince Amartey, and Ike Quartey deserve recognition for their achievements, which have long been overlooked. He emphasized the importance of such monuments to inspire future generations. Vanderpuye’s remarks followed widespread criticism of Akufo-Addo’s self-honor, with the MP suggesting that a statue of Eddie Blay would better serve the Western Region.
