The Aowin Traditional Council has launched a bold spiritual and legal campaign against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, which has severely harmed the region’s water bodies and forest reserves. In a powerful ritual, the council invoked spiritual forces through sacrifices and incantations to warn illegal miners.
The Chief of Nkwanta, Nana Ntow III, emphasized the importance of protecting the region’s natural resources, with Jema being the last community unaffected by galamsey. To curb further environmental damage, the council has imposed stringent rules requiring miners to provide legal documents and commit to environmental preservation. Violators will face both legal and spiritual consequences.
This initiative has received support from locals and environmentalists, but Nana Ntow III has called for greater governmental and private sector support to reinforce the efforts and provide alternative livelihoods for those involved in illegal mining.
