Mahama Orders Probe into Election-Related Deaths.

President Mahama has instructed the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to investigate the deaths of eight individuals during the 2020 and 2024 elections. This directive, issued on January 10, 2025, highlights the government’s commitment to ensuring justice and preserving the integrity of Ghana’s democratic process.

The investigation will be spearheaded by a special task force from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). Their mission includes interviewing witnesses, consulting families of the victims, and using forensic techniques to analyze evidence, such as bullet casings and weaponry. The team will also collaborate with the Electoral Commission and civic organizations to review previous election reports for additional context.

The president has emphasized the need for transparency, urging the task force to provide regular updates. “These deaths demand answers, and justice must be served,” a statement from the presidency affirmed.

This move is seen as a step toward holding perpetrators accountable and fostering trust in Ghana’s electoral system.
