The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has unveiled plans to expand its production capacity from 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 1.4 million bpd, a move that will make it the largest refinery in the world once completed.
President of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, announced the development during a press briefing in Lagos on Sunday, stating that the expansion work will commence immediately.
According to Dangote, the project will position the refinery ahead of India’s Jamnagar Refinery, which currently holds the title of the world’s largest.
“We are expanding the Dangote Petroleum Refinery from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day. Upon completion, this will make it the largest refinery in the world, surpassing the Jamnagar Refinery in India,” Dangote said.
He explained that the expansion project will create about 65,000 jobs, with 85 percent reserved for Nigerians, strengthening the country’s local workforce and industrial capacity.
The refinery, which already produces Euro V standard fuels, will upgrade to Euro VI standards as part of the expansion, meeting the highest global environmental benchmarks.
Dangote also revealed that power generation at the refinery will be doubled from 500 megawatts to 1,000 megawatts to support the facility’s increased operations.
In a significant development, Dangote announced plans to list the refinery on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) in 2026, offering Nigerians an opportunity to own shares in what he described as “a national asset of global significance.”
Expressing appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support, Dangote said the expansion project is expected to be completed within three years.
“This project reinforces our vision of industrial self-sufficiency, energy security, and shared prosperity for Nigeria and Africa,” he added.
When completed, the expanded refinery is expected to further reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported petroleum products and cement the country’s position as a leading player in the global energy market.

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has reduced the gantry price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) by N75 per litre, bringing the new rate to N1,175 per litre from the previous N1,250.
