The Dangote Group has denied reports of a rift between its president, Aliko Dangote, and Tony Elumelu, chairman of the United Bank for Africa, describing the claims as false and malicious. The company said neither Dangote nor the group made any statement suggesting a fallout with Elumelu or disagreements over business dealings.
In a statement issued by the group’s spokesperson, Anthony Chiejina, the conglomerate also dismissed viral claims that the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals project was funded through personal loans from friends. It described such assertions as a misrepresentation of how the multibillion dollar project was financed and challenged those spreading the story to provide verifiable evidence.
The company stressed that Aliko Dangote does not rely on borrowing from friends to fund his investments. It added that suggestions that the refinery is struggling financially or dependent on emergency personal support are completely untrue and capable of misleading the public.
Dangote Group further clarified that there is no estrangement between Dangote and Elumelu, noting that both businessmen maintain a longstanding cordial relationship. It said attempts to portray them as being at odds are part of a wider pattern of fake content and fabricated narratives pushed on social media.
The statement raised concern over the growing use of Dangote’s name, image and voice in unauthorised and AI generated content, including fake interviews and adverts. The company warned that such materials can damage reputations, deceive investors and the public, and may amount to fraud and identity abuse.
Dangote Group warned individuals, bloggers and platforms circulating false information to desist immediately or face legal action. It said its legal team has been instructed to monitor and take steps against serious cases of defamation and misuse of its brand.
The conglomerate reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, integrity and its role in driving industrialisation and economic development across Africa. It also urged members of the public and the media to verify claims from credible sources before sharing, especially when they concern high profile projects and personalities.
