An Abuja High Court has sentenced Mr. Yusuf Baba to three months imprisonment or a fine of ₦50,000 for dangerous driving and ordered him to pay ₦3,190,000 as compensation for damages caused to a patrol vehicle belonging to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other impounded cars.
The incident occurred on June 10, 2025, under Dantata Bridge, Abuja, when FRSC operatives flagged Baba down during a Mobile Court session for overloading.
Rather than comply, Baba sped off recklessly, lost control, and crashed into an FRSC patrol vehicle and another offender’s car before fleeing the scene. He was later arrested at a filling station along CITEC Road and charged with dangerous driving and assaulting a Marshal on duty.
Delivering judgment on October 29, 2025, the court found Baba guilty of dangerous driving, convicted, and sentenced him accordingly, while discharging him on the second count of assault.
In addition to the sentence and fine, the court ordered the suspension of Baba’s driver’s licence for three months and full restitution for the damaged vehicles.
Reacting to the verdict, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed hailed the Judiciary’s decision and commended the FRSC Legal Department for diligently pursuing the case.
“This judgment has once again proven that the era of impunity on our roads is over,” Mohammed said. “Anyone who endangers lives, attacks law enforcement, or damages public property will face the full wrath of the law. FRSC will never back down in defending the safety and dignity of its operatives and road users.”
The FRSC also urged motorists to obey traffic rules, respect enforcement officers, and drive responsibly.
Meanwhile, the Corps has intensified nationwide sensitisation campaigns on road safety, including a recent initiative in Ogun State titled “Take Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving.”
During a visit to the Ayetoro council secretariat, the Ogun State Unit Commander, ACC Ramoni Alade, emphasised the importance of safe driving practices, warning motorists against negligence and reckless behaviour on the roads.

Will more defence funds make Nigeria safer
Nigeria has spent about 32.88 trillion naira on defence in the last 15 years, roughly 12.5 percent of total national budgets of 262.834 trillion naira in that period, yet insecurity remains widespread across the country . Despite these rising allocations, many communities still face insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, communal clashes and oil related violence, raising doubts about whether more money alone can make Nigerians safer . Security trackers estimate that over 100,000 people have been killed in violent incidents since 2012, with thousands abducted and about 3.726 million citizens displaced and living in roughly 3,900 camps nationwide . The trend has continued into 2026, with at least 1,091 deaths recorded from violent attacks in just the first 41 days of the year, underscoring the scale of Nigeria’s security crisis despite years of increased defence spending . Against this backdrop, the National […]
