Cameroon’s opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary has declared victory in Sunday’s presidential election, challenging the long-standing rule of President Paul Biya, who has held power for 43 years.
Tchiroma announced his self-proclaimed win on Facebook, saying, “Our victory is clear. It must be respected.” He urged the government to “accept the truth of the ballot box” or risk plunging the nation into unrest. The opposition leader also promised to release detailed results broken down by region.
“The people have chosen,” Tchiroma stated, as he called on authorities to uphold what he described as the will of the people.
Under Cameroonian law, while candidates are permitted to publish tally sheets, the official results are only valid when announced by the Constitutional Council — a boundary the government has warned must not be crossed.
The situation recalls the 2018 election, when opposition leader Maurice Kamto also declared himself the winner before official results were released. Kamto was later detained, and protests by his supporters were met with tear gas and arrests.
President Biya, now the world’s oldest serving head of state, is seeking yet another term in office. However, Tchiroma, a former employment minister, has drawn significant public support and managed to mount a serious challenge, creating a tense standoff between the two camps.
Images showing regional vote tallies have been widely shared on social media, with both Biya and Tchiroma’s supporters claiming victory ahead of the Constitutional Council’s official declaration, expected within two weeks.
