The remains of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari have departed from London, United Kingdom , for final burial in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State .
According to reports, the late president’s body traveled on a Nigerian Air Force aircraft , arriving early Tuesday morning.
This marks the beginning of formal state rites for one of Nigeria’s most iconic political figures.
VP Shettima Leads High-Level Repatriation Team
Vice President Kashim Shettima is leading a federal government delegation in the UK to finalize all documentation and logistics for the return of Buhari’s remains.
He is coordinating with Nigerian officials and diplomatic staff to ensure everything goes smoothly.
“We are handling this with dignity and respect,” said a government aide.
Tinubu To Receive Buhari’s Remains in Katsina – FG Confirms
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will personally receive the remains of his predecessor upon arrival in Katsina State , according to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris .
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja , Idris confirmed that the body will arrive in Nigeria by Tuesday noon , then be taken to Daura for burial.
“This is a solemn moment for our nation,” Idris said.
The federal government has declared a seven-day mourning period , with national flags flying at half-mast across the country.
Nation Prepares for Beftiting Farewell
Buhari’s death on Sunday in a London hospital has drawn reactions from home and abroad.
Leaders from across the political divide and beyond have expressed grief over the loss of the former military Head of State and two-term civilian president.
As part of the mourning process, the National Assembly has suspended plenary until July 22 , while federal and state agencies prepare for the state funeral scheduled for Tuesday .
A public holiday has also been declared for the day of the burial to allow citizens to pay their respects.
