The Premier League enters another dramatic weekend with heavyweight clashes and mounting pressure on several managers.
Arsenal chase first Anfield win in 12 years
Liverpool and Arsenal, last season’s top two, meet at Anfield in a match that could shape the early title race. Both clubs spent heavily this summer, investing a combined £550 million to strengthen their squads.
Arne Slot’s Liverpool remain unpredictable. Despite winning their opening league games, the Reds have conceded twice in each of their last three matches, raising questions about defensive stability. Still, with attacking talents across the pitch, they remain dangerous.
Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, in contrast, have relied on defensive discipline, starting the campaign without conceding. New signing Viktor Gyökeres scored twice in last week’s 5-0 win over Leeds, while Eberechi Eze could debut on Sunday. The Gunners have not lost against any of England’s “big six” since May 2023, but they have not won at Anfield since 2012 — a record they hope to change.
Amorim fighting for survival at Man United
At Old Trafford, pressure is building on manager Rúben Amorim after United’s shock League Cup defeat to fourth-tier Grimsby. With just one point from their first two Premier League matches, and £200 million spent on new forwards, frustrations are growing.
United’s only league goal so far came via an own goal against Fulham. Burnley’s visit provides Amorim with a must-win opportunity, but anything less than three points could see calls for another managerial change during the international break.
Potter and Nuno under the spotlight
West Ham boss Graham Potter also faces a defining weekend after a poor start that leaves his team bottom of the table. A 3-2 League Cup defeat to Wolves added to frustrations, and captain Jarrod Bowen was seen clashing with fans. Potter has won just five of his 22 games since joining in January.
Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest’s Nuno Espirito Santo is battling off-pitch issues. Reports suggest tensions with owner Evangelos Marinakis and new sporting director Edu are threatening his role, even though Forest have made a steady start with four points from two matches.
