Arbeloa: I’ll be happy if Mourinho returns as Real Madrid coach

Article arrow_drop_down

Real Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa has said he would be happy if his former manager José Mourinho returned to the Bernabéu amid intense speculation linking the Portuguese tactician with the job. Reports in Spain and Portugal claim club president Florentino Pérez is seriously considering bringing back Mourinho as head coach after a trophyless season.

According to Spanish outlet The Objective, one scenario being explored would see Mourinho installed as first-team manager with Arbeloa staying on as his assistant, effectively recreating their close relationship from the early 2010s. Sources close to the former right-back say he is open to such an arrangement and “would not mind” working under his old boss if it benefits the club.

Speaking recently about the rumours, Arbeloa brushed aside any suggestion that he feels threatened by Mourinho’s possible return. He has consistently described the Benfica coach as one of his biggest influences and referred to himself as “one of Mourinho’s boys”, acknowledging the Portuguese’s role in shaping his football ideas.

Mourinho, for his part, has kept the door open while insisting he remains focused on Benfica, who have a Champions League clause in his contract that could allow him to leave for around €3m at the end of the season. Reports suggest the Real Madrid hierarchy see him as a proven winner who could restore discipline and mentality after a difficult campaign.

As speculation swirls, Arbeloa has admitted that Madrid may need a “different mentality” and stronger structure to compete for major trophies again, but has stopped short of confirming any direct talks over his own future. For now, he says his focus is on finishing the season as strongly as possible, while the board decides what direction to take with the bench this summer.

Tambuwal: ADC structure not built for Atiku, defends coalition exits

Former Sokoto State governor and Sokoto South senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is not a party whose structure was built for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or any single politician. Speaking on a Channels Television programme, he dismissed claims that the ADC had been hijacked to serve Atiku’s presidential ambition ahead of 2027. Tambuwal explained that the ADC’s ongoing coalition arrangements were designed as a broader platform for opposition forces, not a personal vehicle for Atiku. He insisted that decisions within the party are taken collectively by its organs and leaders, including chairman David Mark and other stakeholders, rather than being dictated by one individual. Reacting to the exit of key figures like Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso from the coalition, Tambuwal said their decisions were “personal choices” and not evidence of a crisis […]

Arbeloa told me I’ve been demoted to fourth striker – Mbappé

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé has claimed that head coach Álvaro Arbeloa told him he is now only the fourth-choice striker at the club. The France captain made the remark after starting on the bench in Los Blancos’ 2–0 La Liga win over Real Oviedo at the Santiago Bernabéu. Mbappé, who recently returned from a hamstring injury, insisted he was fully fit and ready to start the match. “I’m 100% fine. I didn’t play because, for the coach, I’ve been the fourth-choice striker behind (Franco) Mastantuono, Vini and Gonzalo,” he told reporters in the mixed zone. The 27-year-old explained that Arbeloa opted to start Vinícius Júnior and youngster Gonzalo García in attack, with teenage sensation Mastantuono also ahead of him in the pecking order. “I was ready to start, but Arbeloa informed me that I am now the fourth striker. Man City battle fatigue ahead of FA Cup final clash with troubled Chelsea

Pep Guardiola says Manchester City are battling mounting fatigue as they prepare to face a troubled Chelsea side in Saturday’s FA Cup final at Wembley. City are chasing a domestic cup double while still locked in a tight Premier League title race with Arsenal, leaving the squad stretched by a relentless schedule. Guardiola’s men were in league action as recently as Wednesday, when they beat Crystal Palace 3–0 to close the gap on Arsenal to two points with two games remaining. In contrast, Chelsea have had a full week to rest and train at Cobham, a gap the City boss believes could hand the London club a physical edge at Wembley. “After the FA Cup, we have Bournemouth, we play every three days. Chelsea have a week at home training, preparing the final,” Guardiola said. “We have to travel to […]

Hotels Await World Cup Booking Surge

Hotels across several host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are reporting weaker-than-expected bookings despite growing public excitement ahead of the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico. In cities such as Houston, Miami, Kansas City and New York, World Cup advertising and merchandise have become increasingly visible as preparations intensify for the competition. However, many hotel operators say the anticipated surge in reservations has yet to materialize. According to the American Hotel and Lodging Association, a large number of hotels in host cities are currently recording lower booking levels compared to the same period last year. Several hotel owners and managers told the BBC they expected significantly stronger demand months before the tournament begins. Deidre Mathis, owner of the Wanderstay Boutique Hotel in Houston, said her establishment remains far below projected occupancy levels despite being located near […]
