APC Rules Out Fubara’s Entry Into Party
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has strongly denied reports that suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara could defect to the ruling party.
Tony Okocha, the state chairman of the APC and a close ally of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike , made this clear during a press briefing at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja.
“The APC is not a dumping ground for political misfits,” he said.
Okocha spoke out after rumors emerged that Fubara had held a private meeting with President Bola Tinubu during the recent Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.
He dismissed these claims, stating that many leaders meet the president and that it does not imply any political movement or endorsement.
No Backdoor Entry for Fubara, Says Okocha
Okocha emphasized that if Fubara were serious about joining the APC, he would have to follow due process—publicly, and without shortcuts.
“His sins cannot be forgiven overnight,” he said.
“Fubara cannot enter the APC through the back door.”
He added:
“There are procedures for joining the APC—and they must be followed.”
Okocha also reminded the public that the impeachment proceedings against Fubara are still active.
“The Supreme Court judgment and Assembly actions remain hanging over him like a sword of Damocles.”
This makes any move toward APC membership unlikely, especially in a state where the party remains loyal to Minister Wike’s faction .
Fubara Hasn’t Reached Out to Reconcile
Okocha accused Fubara of failing to reach out to members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who support Minister Wike.
“Fubara is yet to make any reconciliatory moves,” Okocha stated.
Instead, he claimed the governor was giving false assurances to his suspended local government chairmen that they would return to office once he regains power.
“On May 29, they sat in a room somewhere, and he assured them that when he returns, they should be calm because they’ll all go back to their positions. That is why they continue their grandstanding—they believe they can’t be touched.”
Okocha warned that such behavior undermines efforts at political stability and contradicts the spirit of national unity.
Tinubu’s Intervention Doesn’t Guarantee Redemption
Despite President Tinubu’s intervention that stopped Fubara’s impeachment and possible removal from office, Okocha said the governor has not taken lessons from the crisis.
“Tinubu gave him a second chance—but Fubara has not changed his ways.”
He urged the suspended governor to engage in real dialogue with stakeholders before seeking political refuge in the APC.
