World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz fought back from a set down to beat Casper Ruud 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Monday in Tokyo, booking his place in the Japan Open final and matching a milestone last achieved by Rafael Nadal.
The 21-year-old Spaniard, already the US Open champion, has now reached his 10th final of the season — the first player to do so since Nadal in 2017.
“Following his steps in making 10 finals in a season is something great,” Alcaraz said. “Hopefully it’s not going to end here — a few tournaments ahead, hopefully (I’ll) get to the finals there as well.”
Despite carrying an ankle injury from earlier in the tournament, Alcaraz dug deep after losing the first set. He blasted nine aces in the second and broke Ruud midway through the third to seal the win with one of his trademark forehands.
“Emotionally it was really tough to deal with everything today,” he admitted. “I’m really happy to turn it around and finish playing great tennis. I’m excited to be in another final.”
Alcaraz will face Taylor Fritz in Tuesday’s final. The American world No. 5, who beat him two weeks ago at the Laver Cup in San Francisco, defeated compatriot Jenson Brooksby 6-4, 6-3 in the other semi-final.
Alcaraz acknowledged Fritz as a tough opponent but said he had gained useful insight after practicing with him in Tokyo before the tournament began.
“That practice gave me really good feedback on how I should approach the match,” Alcaraz said. “I will try to play my best tennis tomorrow — my Plan A — because his level is pretty high right now.”
The Spaniard has now notched 66 wins this season, a personal best, and aims to cap his remarkable run with yet another title.

Dangote Refinery denies petrol export and re-import claims
Dangote Petroleum Refinery has denied claims that its petrol is being exported to Togo and then brought back into Nigeria. The company said the allegation is false and does not reflect its business operations. It explained that the claims are not supported by trade records, commercial logic, or its normal supply process. According to the refinery, its sales contracts do not allow the resale or re-importation of its products into Nigeria. The company said this rule is part of its standard compliance system. Dangote Refinery also said the alleged trade route would not make economic sense. It noted that shipping fuel from Nigeria to Lomé and back into Nigeria would add extra logistics costs that would make such a plan unprofitable. The company said no rational producer would spend additional money on shipping, storage, financing and handling only for the […]

State police debate advances in Senate
Nigeria’s debate over state police has moved forward after President Bola Tinubu sent a constitutional amendment bill to the Senate. The proposal seeks to create a legal framework for state police as part of wider efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s security system. Lawmakers say the plan could help states respond faster to local security challenges. The bill was read in the Senate and referred to the Constitution Review Committee for further work. The committee is expected to examine the proposal and report back to the Senate before any final decision is made. Supporters of state police say the current federal policing structure is no longer enough to handle the country’s growing security problems. They believe giving states more control over policing could improve response time and intelligence gathering. However, the proposal is still subject to more legislative steps. For the bill […]

French health officials said the doctor was quickly admitted to a specialist hospital and placed in isolation. Authorities said the patient is receiving proper care and that contact tracing is already under way. They also said the risk of wider spread in France remains low because the case was identified quickly. The outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has already caused a large number of infections and deaths. Health workers there continue to work under difficult conditions as they try to contain the virus. Ebola is a serious and often deadly disease, but health […]

Russia says nuclear weapons are key to preventing global war
Russia has said nuclear weapons remain the main shield against a possible global war. The comment came from the Kremlin amid growing concerns about global insecurity and a new arms race. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the world’s security system is weakening and that nuclear deterrence is now the only thing preventing a wider war. Speaking in Moscow at a foreign policy forum, Peskov said the current international situation is becoming more unstable. He said nuclear weapons are still the strongest guarantee against a global conflict, even though they do not stop regional wars. His remarks come as tension remains high between Russia and the West. The last nuclear arms control treaty between Russia and the United States expired in February, leaving no replacement agreement in place. Russia has repeatedly defended its nuclear policy as a way to protect national […]

US waives Iran sanctions as Trump warns Tehran
The United States has waived sanctions on Iran for 60 days following the first round of talks linked to a new peace agreement. The waiver is part of an early step meant to ease tensions and support the talks. It allows Tehran to resume limited oil sales and receive payments during the 60-day period. US President Donald Trump said he would take action if Iran fails to respect the terms of the deal. He warned that Washington would respond if Tehran does not keep its side of the agreement. The move marks a temporary shift in US policy toward Iran and comes as both sides test the fragile peace process.

Five highly anticipated 2026 World Cup matches that disappointed fans
The 2026 FIFA World Cup has been praised for its exciting moments and viral fan experiences, but at least five matches that fans expected to be thrilling instead delivered disappointing results. One of the biggest disappointments was Spain’s goalless draw against underdog Cape Verde, a team ranked 65 places below Spain. Spain was one of the top favorites for the tournament, and many fans expected a high-scoring victory, but the match ended 0–0 in a lacklustre performance. Cristiano Ronaldo’s largely inconspicuous performance in DR Congo’s 1–1 draw with Portugal also left many viewers wondering whether he is past his prime. Despite high hopes for Ronaldo’s influence, he struggled to make a major impact as DR Congo scored its first-ever World Cup goal through Yoane Wissa. Mexico’s match against South Korea, which was expected to be a key battle for the […]
