World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz fought back from a set down to beat Casper Ruud 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Monday in Tokyo, booking his place in the Japan Open final and matching a milestone last achieved by Rafael Nadal.
The 21-year-old Spaniard, already the US Open champion, has now reached his 10th final of the season — the first player to do so since Nadal in 2017.
“Following his steps in making 10 finals in a season is something great,” Alcaraz said. “Hopefully it’s not going to end here — a few tournaments ahead, hopefully (I’ll) get to the finals there as well.”
Despite carrying an ankle injury from earlier in the tournament, Alcaraz dug deep after losing the first set. He blasted nine aces in the second and broke Ruud midway through the third to seal the win with one of his trademark forehands.
“Emotionally it was really tough to deal with everything today,” he admitted. “I’m really happy to turn it around and finish playing great tennis. I’m excited to be in another final.”
Alcaraz will face Taylor Fritz in Tuesday’s final. The American world No. 5, who beat him two weeks ago at the Laver Cup in San Francisco, defeated compatriot Jenson Brooksby 6-4, 6-3 in the other semi-final.
Alcaraz acknowledged Fritz as a tough opponent but said he had gained useful insight after practicing with him in Tokyo before the tournament began.
“That practice gave me really good feedback on how I should approach the match,” Alcaraz said. “I will try to play my best tennis tomorrow — my Plan A — because his level is pretty high right now.”
The Spaniard has now notched 66 wins this season, a personal best, and aims to cap his remarkable run with yet another title.

US Iran war: FG gets N5tn oil windfall amid fuel pain
Nigeria’s Federal Government has earned an estimated N5.13 trillion oil windfall from the surge in global crude prices triggered by the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran. However, despite the revenue boost, Nigerians continue to grapple with fuel scarcity, high pump prices and rising transport and living costs. According to industry data cited in the report, the country’s additional crude oil earnings have accumulated over recent months as Brent prices climbed well above earlier budget projections. The war and fears of wider instability in the Middle East have tightened global supply, pushing up prices and generating unexpected income for oil producing nations, including Nigeria. Analysts estimate that Nigeria’s windfall, put at about N5.13 trillion, is based on the difference between the benchmark oil price in the national budget and the much higher average price recorded since hostilities escalated. Dangote Group denies rift with Elumelu, warns of legal action
The Dangote Group has denied reports of a rift between its president, Aliko Dangote, and Tony Elumelu, chairman of the United Bank for Africa, describing the claims as false and malicious. The company said neither Dangote nor the group made any statement suggesting a fallout with Elumelu or disagreements over business dealings. In a statement issued by the group’s spokesperson, Anthony Chiejina, the conglomerate also dismissed viral claims that the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals project was funded through personal loans from friends. It described such assertions as a misrepresentation of how the multibillion dollar project was financed and challenged those spreading the story to provide verifiable evidence. The company stressed that Aliko Dangote does not rely on borrowing from friends to fund his investments. It added that suggestions that the refinery is struggling financially or dependent on emergency personal […]

In Ekiti State, another special raid led to the arrest of an 80 year old man identified as Oke Samuel at Mosafuneto camp. Watford Sack Head Coach Ed Still After Poor Run
Watford Football Club have parted company with head coach Ed Still after a short spell in charge at Vicarage Road, ending his tenure after less than three months. The 35-year-old Belgian was appointed on 9 February on a two-and-a-half-year contract following the departure of his predecessor Javi Gracia. At the time of his arrival, Watford were 11th in the table and only three points outside the Championship play-off positions. However, results quickly declined. The team won just three of their last 15 league matches under Still, eventually finishing 16th in the table. They ended the season 16 points adrift of the play-off places and only 10 points above the relegation zone. Still’s final match in charge was a heavy 4-0 home defeat to Champions Coventry City. It marked Watford’s fifth consecutive loss, during which they conceded 16 goals and scored […]

Barcelona Close in on La Liga Title After Osasuna Win
Barcelona have moved a step closer to securing a second consecutive La Liga title after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Osasuna at Estadio El Sadar. The win extends Barcelona’s lead at the top of the table to 14 points, leaving them on the verge of being crowned champions under head coach Hansi Flick. The Catalan side could officially seal the title as early as Sunday if Real Madrid fail to beat Espanyol. If Real Madrid win, Barcelona will still have the opportunity to clinch the championship by avoiding defeat in their upcoming home clash against Real Madrid on May 10. The match in Pamplona was tightly contested for long spells before Barcelona broke the deadlock through a well-worked attacking move. Substitute Marcus Rashford delivered a precise cross into the box, where striker Robert Lewandowski rose to head home the opening […]

Onyedika rejects Brugge deal, pushes for big transfer
Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika has rejected a new contract offer from Belgian club Club Brugge as he pushes for a major transfer this summer. Reports in Belgium say the club has been trying for some time to extend his deal, but the Nigerian has turned down every proposal so far. Brugge were unwilling to let Onyedika leave during the January transfer window because of his importance to their title challenge. However, the player is now said to be focused on securing a move at the end of the season, and this has reportedly affected his concentration in recent weeks. Onyedika has attracted interest from several clubs in Europe’s top leagues following his strong performances for both club and country. Premier League side Aston Villa are among the teams monitoring his situation closely, while German Bundesliga clubs Wolfsburg and Eintracht […]
