Hundreds of Zamfara Residents Still Without Homes After Windstorm
Residents in Bungudu and Maru Local Government Areas of Zamfara State continue to live with relatives and neighbors nearly one month after a powerful windstorm struck their communities on May 15, 2025 .
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) shared this update following an assessment conducted in the affected areas and posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday .
According to NEMA, the storm hit nine communities , including:
- Hayin-Gebe
- Sabon Fegi
- Furfuri
- Sabon Gari Furfuri
- FGGC
- Mamula/Yarkuka
- Kofar Yamma
- Rawuya
- Baila
These areas saw damage to approximately 300 houses , with reports of collapsed walls and fences , blown-off rooftops , and disruptions to public facilities.
“Approximately 300 houses were damaged… Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were recorded,” NEMA said in its report.
While some families have started rebuilding their homes, others remain displaced, relying on the support of extended family and neighbors.
Assessment Reveals Scale of Damage
NEMA officials led the field assessment, working closely with members of the affected communities and the representative of the Bungudu/Maru Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives .
The findings show that structural damage was widespread across the nine communities. The storm caused significant destruction to both private and public infrastructure.
Some residents have begun repairs on their own, but many still lack the resources to fully restore their homes.
Communities Show Resilience Amid Hardship
Despite the challenges, local resilience is evident. Many displaced families have found temporary shelter through community networks.
However, concerns remain about long-term housing recovery, especially for those without close family nearby.
“While some affected residents have begun partial rehabilitation of their homes, others are currently taking refuge with relatives and neighbors,” NEMA reported.
This highlights the need for more structured government and humanitarian intervention to support full recovery and prevent further hardship.
