World Bank Sounds Alarm: Global Gas Flaring Hits 17-Year High in 2024

Article arrow_drop_down

2024 Gas Flaring Crisis: Key Findings

  • Global flaring volume: ▲ 3 bcm to 151 bcm (highest since 2007)
  • Flaring intensity: Unchanged for 15+ years (per barrel of oil produced)
  • Top 9 flaring nations: Account for 75% of flares but <50% of oil output
  • CO2e emissions: 389 million tonnes (incl. unburnt methane)

⚠️ Why This Matters

✔ Wasted energy: Flared gas could power millions in energy-poor regions
✔ Climate impact: Methane from flares is 80x worse than CO₂ short-term
✔ 2030 deadline: Zero Routine Flaring (ZRF) initiative is off-track

🌐 Regional Flaring Hotspots

CountryTrendKey Issue
Russia▲ FlaringAging infrastructure
Iraq▲ FlaringWeak regulation
Nigeria▼ Flaring (ZRF)Progress but still high
USA▲ Flaring (Permian)Shale boom side-effect

💡 World Bank’s Solutions

1️⃣ Policy Reform: Enforce stricter flaring bans & methane caps
2️⃣ Tech Investment: Satellite monitoring (NOAA) + flare-capture systems
3️⃣ Funding: GFMR grants for flare-to-power projects
4️⃣ Corporate Accountability: Penalties for routine flaring

🗣️ Expert Warning

*“Flaring is climate arson. Every year we delay, the 2030 zero-flaring goal slips further away.”*
— Global Flaring and Methane Reduction (GFMR) Partnership

📌 Success Stories

✅ Norway: <1% flaring via strict taxes & gas monetization
✅ Kazakhstan: ▼ 50% flaring since 2012 (GFMR-supported projects)
✅ Angola: ▼ 30% flaring via LNG conversion

🚨 Urgent Calls to Action

  • Governments: Fast-track ZRF policies & subsidies for flare gas utilization
  • Oil Firms: Prioritize flare-to-energy projects over short-term cost cuts
  • Public Pressure: Hold laggard countries/companies accountable

Ghana to Declare 21 Marine Protected Areas Starting at Greater Cape Three Points

Ghana is preparing to declare 21 coastal communities as Marine Protected Areas in a major step toward restoring marine biodiversity and strengthening fisheries management. The first declaration is expected to take place at Greater Cape Three Points in the Western Region. Once designated, fishing activities within the protected zones will be restricted to allow depleted fish stocks to recover. Part of the Global 30×30 Target The move forms part of Ghana’s commitment to the global 30×30 target, which calls for the protection of at least 30 percent of the world’s land and ocean areas by 2030. The goal falls under Target 3 of the Global Biodiversity Framework and has been adopted by more than 190 countries. Despite the widespread commitment, progress remains slow. Since 2022, global reviews show that only about 2.9 percent of the ocean is fully or highly […]

He criticised Trump for what he described as contempt for international law and United Nations resolutions, noting that the US under his watch has withdrawn from dozens of UN decisions. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria argued that Nigeria and other countries must persuade global powers such as China and Russia to intervene diplomatically in the crisis, since they wield significant influence over […]

It later emerged that his name was not on the original list screened and approved by the upper chamber, forcing the presidency to withdraw the announcement and blame a “naming mix up.” To […]
