Ghana’s Volta Region is positioning itself as the country’s next green industrial hub by launching a major Kenaf cultivation and processing initiative. The project, announced on July 14, 2025, builds on insights from a recent delegation to Malaysia, and aims to transform Kenaf—dubbed Ghana’s “green gold”—into a major export and industrial crop.
Project Strategy & International Collaboration
A delegation from the Volta Regional Coordinating Council visited Kuala Lumpur in May 2025 to study Malaysia’s robust Kenaf industry model, resulting in:
- Technical partnerships and a formal MoU with Malaysian industry bodies
- Appointment of a Malaysian Kenaf expert as “Kenaf Ambassador to Ghana”
- Donation of seeds and plans for pilot cultivation and seed multiplication trials in August 2025
Economic Scale & Regional Leadership
Kenaf matures in just 3–4 months and offers over 31 industrial applications—from biodegradable packaging and textiles to animal feed and automotive components. A 1,000-hectare plantation could yield $200 million annually and create around 1,500 direct jobs.
Volta is already preparing 5,000 hectares for pilot farming, setting up a dedicated management board, and establishing the Volta Kenaf Development Company to tie together the value chain—from cultivation to finished products.
Sustainability & Agricultural Integration
The scheme incorporates smart crop rotation with rice: once harvested, fields will transition to Kenaf before replanting rice—allowing year-round productivity without sacrificing food security. Volta already contributes about 23% of Ghana’s rice output.
Why This Matters
- Industrial diversification: Moves Ghana from traditional raw export crops to higher-value, processed sectors
- Rural employment: Generates jobs in farming, processing, logistics, and manufacturing
- Green growth: Kenaf supports sustainable development with biodegradable and bio-based products
- Replicable model: If successful, could serve as a template for other Ghanaian regions and West African nations
Conclusion
By embracing Kenaf, the Volta Region is crafting a homegrown green-industrial success story—backed by international expertise, government investment, and a well-laid operational blueprint. If fully executed, it promises to elevate the region’s—and Ghana’s—place in global sustainable agriculture and industry.
