Protests erupted for a second consecutive night in Minneapolis and several other major US cities following the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent. Demonstrations also spread to Houston, Cincinnati, Washington DC and Philadelphia, with many protesters demanding the abolition of ICE.
In Minneapolis, mourners gathered near the site where Good’s vehicle crashed after she was shot, leaving flowers and candles only a short distance from where George Floyd was killed in 2020. That earlier tragedy had triggered nationwide demonstrations and remains a powerful symbol in the city’s collective memory.
Tensions were also high in Portland, Oregon, where two people were wounded during a separate incident involving federal border patrol agents. The Department of Homeland Security said agents were responding to a traffic stop involving a suspected Venezuelan gang member who allegedly tried to drive into them. Portland’s mayor questioned this account, prompting fresh protests outside an ICE facility in the city, where six people were arrested.
ICE continues to play a central role in the Trump administration’s large-scale deportation campaign, one of the main promises of the president’s election platform. The agency’s expanded presence has heightened public scrutiny and political divisions.
In Minnesota, conflicting versions of events have deepened the controversy surrounding Good’s death. Federal officials say the ICE agent fired in self-defence, while city leaders insist she posed no threat and was simply trying to leave. The FBI has taken over the investigation, leading Minnesota’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to withdraw after being denied access to key evidence.
Footage of the incident shows agents surrounding Good’s car and ordering her to exit. As the vehicle moved forward, an officer fired, after which the car drove away and crashed. State officials and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey dispute claims that she attempted to harm the agents, calling the federal account misleading.
Governor Tim Walz has deployed the National Guard to maintain security as protests continue, while federal authorities are reportedly sending additional agents into the city. The disagreement between state and federal leaders over who controls the investigation has raised concerns about transparency and public trust.
At the crash site, vigils have continued, with residents gathering to remember Good. Community members described her as a creative and caring person who had recently moved to Minneapolis. Her mother, Donna Ganger, said her daughter was likely frightened during the confrontation but was known for her kindness and compassion.
Local residents and activists say the case reflects broader tensions over immigration enforcement and policing in the United States. Legal experts warn that excluding state authorities from the investigation could damage confidence in the process, even though Minnesota could still pursue charges later if evidence supports it.
