Lomé, September 30, 2025 – The Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU) Campus in Lomé has officially launched the development of its 2026–2030 Hospital Establishment Project (PEH), a five-year roadmap aimed at redefining the hospital’s mission, modernizing infrastructure, and improving the quality of care.
A hospital under pressure
Founded in 1988 with 200 beds, CHU-Campus has grown into Togo’s second-largest university hospital, now employing over 540 staff members. Yet, it is facing severe capacity limits due to demographic growth and an increasing burden of chronic diseases.
“Our capacities are exceeded. The quality of care is a strategic priority that must guide our actions,” said Dr. Essotom Assina Kalao, Director-General of CHU-Campus. He also underlined the importance of anticipating equipment maintenance to prevent rapid obsolescence and ensure sustainability.
Reform framework: 2026–2030
The PEH 2026–2030 will structure the hospital’s modernization over five years, with two interim evaluations to measure progress. It aligns with the national hospital reform strategy led by the Ministry of Health, which seeks to make the Togolese health system more resilient and responsive.
Complementary investments already underway
The reform dovetails with two major investment programs:
- The Public Investment Project (PIP), launched in 2022, which has already reinforced hospital equipment and will deliver a new emergency complex and several specialized services.
- The Ellipse Rehabilitation Project, starting in early 2026, which will modernize hospital buildings and install advanced medical equipment such as MRI scanners, new operating theaters, and nephrology units.
Toward a modernized healthcare system
By combining institutional reform with large-scale investments, CHU-Campus positions itself as a key pillar of Togo’s healthcare modernization agenda. The initiative is expected to improve patient care, strengthen specialized services, and enhance hospital management practices.
