Nigeria Assessing U.S. Attack on Iran Before Commenting – Spokesperson
The Federal Government of Nigeria is currently reviewing the U.S. military strike that destroyed three Iranian nuclear enrichment sites , including Fordow, Natanz , and Esfahan , according to an official spokesperson from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs .
This comes days after Nigeria strongly condemned Israel’s earlier attack on Iran, calling it an escalation of hostilities and urging diplomacy over violence.
But regarding the U.S. strikes , the government is taking a more cautious approach.
“We are still assessing the operation fully,” the spokesperson told Peoples Gazette .
“Once we have completed our review, we will make our position known.”
Nigeria Avoids Immediate Condemnation Amid Delicate Balancing Act
Despite global reactions—ranging from praise by UK and France to condemnation by Russia and Cuba —Nigeria has not taken a public stance yet.
Sources say this is to avoid triggering backlash from the U.S., especially after Nigeria was previously listed among 36 countries considered for American travel bans .
President Donald Trump described the attack as a “spectacular military success” carried out by troops who delivered a full payload on Fordow—the country’s main uranium enrichment site.
He also said he would decide within two weeks whether the U.S. would join Israel in further attacks on Iran.
Iran Vows Retaliation, Tensions Rise
Iran has vowed to retaliate strongly against the U.S. for the bombing of its nuclear infrastructure.
“This aggression will not go unanswered,” Iranian authorities warned.
They described the attack as a violation of international law and national sovereignty.
Meanwhile, regional allies and global powers continue to take sides:
- Some back the U.S. move as a warning to Iran
- Others call it reckless and provocative
Nigeria remains silent for now, but its eventual stance may influence how African nations respond collectively.
