Tinubu Delivers Democracy Day 2025 Address Before National Assembly
On June 12, 2025 , President Bola Ahmed Tinubu addressed a joint session of the National Assembly in Abuja to mark Democracy Day , celebrating the resilience of Nigeria’s democratic values and institutions.
The event honored the legacy of Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola , whose June 12 election victory in 1993 was officially recognized by the government under Tinubu’s leadership.
“Today, as I entered this grand edifice built from the sweat and toil of our democratic yearning, my heart stirred with pride and resolve.”
A Tribute to Democratic Heroes
In his speech, Tinubu paid homage to democracy icons who sacrificed their lives for the cause:
- Alhaja Kudirat Abiola
- Pa Alfred Rewane
- Anthony Enahoro
- Gani Fawehinmi
- Dan Suleiman
- Abraham Adesanya
- Ayo Adebanjo
- Balarabe Musa
- Ganiyu Dawodu
- Bagauda Kaltho
- Commodore Ndubuisi Kanu
He emphasized that the struggle for democracy was pan-Nigerian , cutting across ethnic lines and regions.
“The fight for democracy was never the province of any one group. It was a national movement—led by many, cherished by all.”
Rejecting One-Party Rule: Tinubu’s Clear Message
Responding to fears about an APC-led one-party state, Tinubu gave a strong rebuttal:
“Let me put a terrible rumour to bed. At no time in the past, nor any instance in the present, shall I view the notion of a one-party state as good for Nigeria.”
He added that he has never attempted to alter party registration at INEC and urged political parties to fix internal issues rather than blame those leaving for better opportunities.
“We would be guilty of political malpractice if we closed the door on those seeking change,” he said.
Tinubu welcomed recent defections from other parties, including Governors Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta) and Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom) , calling them part of a natural political evolution.
Democracy Is About Debate, Not Division
Tinubu reminded lawmakers and citizens that democracy thrives not through uniformity but through healthy debate , constructive disagreement , and institutional cooperation .
“Every time we debate instead of battle, discuss instead of destroy, we preserve the institutions of democracy.”
He praised the National Assembly for its historic role in upholding democratic principles, citing how it resisted former attempts to amend the constitution for personal gain.
“You are the authors of the people’s law, and I must be their faithful implementer.”
Economic Reforms Are Paying Off
Reflecting on economic progress since taking office, Tinubu outlined tangible results:
- GDP grew by 3.4% in 2024 , with Q4 recording 4.6% growth — the highest in over a decade
- Inflation is easing, stabilizing prices for staples like rice and beans
- Net foreign reserves have increased fivefold
- The naira exchange rate has stabilized
- States no longer rely heavily on borrowing to pay salaries
He also highlighted social interventions such as the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) , which has already helped over 100,000 Nigerians access affordable credit for vehicles, home improvements, and essential purchases.
“This July, we will launch a bold initiative to empower 400,000 young Nigerians through consumer credit and skills development programs.”
Through initiatives like NELFUND , the administration continues to invest in youth readiness, education, and entrepreneurship.
