Super Eagles players who finished as runners up at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations have officially received their national honours certificates along with title documents for houses and land promised by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The presentation was held on December 22, 2025, at the team’s hotel in Fez, Morocco, ahead of the start of their new AFCON qualifying campaign.
President Tinubu announced the rewards after Nigeria’s impressive run at AFCON 2023 in Côte d’Ivoire, where the team reached the final earlier in 2024. The package included national honours, housing allocations in Abuja or Lagos and land grants in Abuja for squad members and officials.
The brief ceremony was led by National Sports Commission chairman Shehu Dikko and attended by top government and sports officials. They included Senate Sports Committee chairman Senator Abdul Ningi, House Sports Committee chairman Kabiru Amadu, Comptroller General of Customs Bashir Adewale, NFF president Ibrahim Gusau, presidential aide Mrs Nathan Mash, Nigerian High Commission representatives and others.
Dikko explained that most players were conferred with the Member of the Order of the Niger honour. Ahmed Musa and Victor Osimhen were awarded the Officer of the Order of the Niger, having previously received the MON title.
Team captain William Troost Ekong received the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic honour in recognition of being named Player of the Tournament at AFCON 2023. Dikko said all honours and property allocations approved by the president have now been fully processed, with official allocation letters handed over.
He added that similar benefits approved for the Super Falcons and men’s basketball team D’Tigers have also been worked on. According to him, title documents and honours certificates are ready, while the Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Accountant General are finalising direct payment of cash rewards worth the equivalent of 100,000 dollars per player into their bank accounts.
Officials say the move reflects a more structured approach to athlete welfare and accountability in Nigerian sports. With the promises now fulfilled, the Super Eagles are expected to focus fully on their AFCON qualification duties as they look to build on their previous success.
