Shettima Heads to Gabon for President-Elect Oligui Nguema’s Inauguration
Vice President Kashim Shettima is set to depart Abuja today (Saturday) for Libreville, Gabon , where he will represent President Bola Tinubu at the inauguration of Gabon’s President-elect, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema .
The inauguration marks a significant milestone in Gabon’s political landscape, as Oligui Nguema transitions from his role as interim leader to officially assuming the presidency. He has been at the helm of Gabon’s government since August 2023 , following a period of political transition.
Oligui Nguema’s Electoral Victory
Oligui Nguema secured a decisive victory in Gabon’s April 12 presidential election , according to final results released by the country’s Constitutional Court. He garnered 58,074 votes , representing 94.85% of the total votes cast.
The election saw Oligui Nguema face seven challengers , including former Prime Minister Alain Claude Bilie-By-Nze , who finished second with just 3% of the vote. Other candidates failed to surpass the 1% threshold , underscoring the president-elect’s overwhelming support.
Nigeria’s Support for Democratic Transition

According to a statement issued by Stanley Nkwocha , a Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Vice President Shettima is expected to return to Nigeria shortly after the inauguration ceremony.
