The Seattle Seahawks produced a dominant defensive display to defeat the New England Patriots 29-13 in Sunday’s Super Bowl at Levi’s Stadium, capping the NFL season with authority.
In a contest billed as a clash of elite defences, Seattle clearly had the upper hand. Their unit, nicknamed “the Dark Side”, overwhelmed New England throughout the night, delivering one of the most commanding defensive performances in recent Super Bowl history.
At the heart of that success was defensive co-ordinator Aden Durde. The 46-year-old Briton became the first overseas coach to win the NFL’s biggest game, having played a central role in shaping a defence that proved decisive on the sport’s grandest stage in Santa Clara, California.
The Seahawks held the Patriots scoreless in the first half to take a 9-0 lead into the break. New England quarterback Drake Maye, who narrowly missed out on the league’s MVP award this season, struggled to cope with Seattle’s relentless pressure. He was sacked six times, turned the ball over on three occasions and saw one interception returned for a touchdown.
Seattle struck early in the fourth quarter when Maye’s first turnover set up a touchdown pass to tight end AJ Barner. Linebacker Uchenna Nwosu later sealed the outcome by returning an interception 45 yards for a score. Kicker Jason Meyers added a Super Bowl record five field goals to complete the scoring.
Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald praised his team’s unity and belief after the final whistle, saying their collective trust and defensive mindset were key to securing the championship.
The victory also marked a career-defining moment for quarterback Sam Darnold. Written off by many earlier in his career, the 28-year-old claimed his first Super Bowl title in his debut season with Seattle, completing a remarkable turnaround after spells with four previous NFL teams.
Seattle’s defence proved too deep and versatile for New England to handle. Cornerback Devon Witherspoon, along with Derick Hall and Rylie Mills, all recorded sacks in the first half, while Byron Murphy recovered a fumble and added two sacks of his own. The Patriots managed just four first downs and 52 total yards before half-time.
New England, appearing in their first Super Bowl since 2019, were seeking a record seventh title. Head coach Mike Vrabel, a former Patriots player, had rebuilt the team after two difficult seasons and guided them to a record 12th Super Bowl appearance. However, his side were unable to establish their running game or get star receiver Stefon Diggs involved.
Maye briefly lifted Patriots hopes with a touchdown pass to Mack Hollins, but consecutive interceptions soon ended any chance of a comeback. A late score from Rhamondre Stevenson proved only a consolation.
Running back Kenneth Walker was named Super Bowl MVP after a standout performance, rushing for 135 yards and becoming the first player in his position to win the award since 1998.
