Essential Health Guidelines for Hajj Pilgrims Released
The Saudi Ministry of Health has released a set of practical guidelines to help pilgrims manage common injuries and health challenges during Hajj.
These tips are part of broader efforts under the Health Sector Transformation Programme and the Pilgrim Experience Programme , both aligned with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 —aimed at improving health outcomes and safety for millions of worshippers taking part in the sacred pilgrimage.
Common Injuries During Hajj and How to Handle Them
Walking long distances, standing for extended periods, and navigating crowded spaces can lead to various minor injuries during Hajj. The ministry provided clear, easy-to-follow guidance for pilgrims:
1. Choose Proper Footwear
Wearing comfortable, supportive shoes is critical. This helps prevent blisters, foot pain, and other mobility issues that may arise from walking on hot or uneven surfaces.
2. Avoid Slippery Surfaces and Steep Slopes
Pilgrims should avoid areas with slippery floors or steep inclines to reduce the risk of falls and ankle injuries.
3. Treat Ankle Sprains Immediately
If a sprain occurs, the ministry advises:
- Applying a cold compress
- Elevating the affected foot
- Avoiding pressure or movement until healed
This approach helps reduce swelling and speeds up recovery.
4. Manage Bruises and Minor Injuries
For bruises or light trauma, applying ice and resting the affected area can ease discomfort and promote healing.
5. Monitor Blood Sugar Levels
Pilgrims with diabetes should check their blood sugar regularly. Carrying balanced snacks can help maintain energy levels and prevent hypoglycemia due to physical strain and long hours outdoors.
6. Treat Nosebleeds Correctly
If a nosebleed occurs:
- Sit upright and lean forward
- Gently pinch the soft part of the nose for at least 10 minutes
- Seek medical attention if bleeding does not stop
Why These Guidelines Matter
Millions of Muslims travel to Saudi Arabia each year for Hajj, often enduring extreme heat and physically demanding rituals. Many pilgrims walk for hours and stand for long periods, increasing the risk of minor injuries and health complications.
The release of these Hajj injury management guidelines ensures that pilgrims have access to preventive and first aid information that can keep them safe and healthy throughout the journey.
“These efforts reflect our commitment to raising health awareness and delivering top-tier care to all pilgrims,” the ministry said.
