The Qatari Ministry of Interior has introduced new entry restrictions that bar Nigerian men travelling without family members from obtaining tourist or transit visas.
The policy, which took effect on 5 September 2025, applies to both new and pending visa applications. Under the revised rules, only women and families are eligible, while men travelling independently will only qualify if accompanied by relatives.
In addition, applicants must provide:
- A confirmed return transfer
- Proof of five-star hotel accommodation before visa processing
Qatar says the measures are designed to curb overstays, a growing concern among Gulf states.
Impact on Nigerians
The new restrictions affect Nigerians who frequently use Doha as a transit hub to Asia and Europe, as well as business executives and students travelling for academic or professional reasons.
Independent travel for Nigerian men has now been curtailed, limiting mobility and raising costs for those seeking entry into or through Qatar.
Diplomatic concerns
The move risks straining Nigeria-Qatar relations, which have previously seen efforts to ease entry barriers. In 2019, then-Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki appealed for relaxed visa rules, while former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika made similar requests in 2023.
With the latest policy, those efforts appear to have been reversed, sparking renewed debate on the treatment of Nigerians abroad.
