In a decisive move to bolster transparency and accountability within Ghana’s public service, President John Dramani Mahama has issued a stern ultimatum to all political appointees: declare your assets by close of day, Wednesday, May 7, 2025, or face immediate dismissal. This directive underscores the administration’s commitment to combating corruption and ensuring ethical governance.
Mandatory Asset Declaration: A Non-Negotiable Requirement
President Mahama’s directive mandates that all political appointees who assumed office before March 31, 2025, must submit their asset declarations by the specified deadline. Failure to comply will result in automatic termination of their appointments. This measure aims to reinforce the importance of transparency and deter any form of financial impropriety within the government.
Financial Penalties for Non-Compliance
In addition to the threat of dismissal, appointees who missed the initial March 31 deadline are subject to financial sanctions. Specifically, they are required to forfeit three months’ salary, which will be directed to the “Mahama Cares Trust Fund,” a medical support initiative established under the current administration. This is in addition to a previously mandated one-month salary contribution, bringing the total forfeiture to four months’ salary for non-compliant officials.
Implementation of a New Code of Conduct
The President’s announcement coincides with the unveiling of a comprehensive Code of Conduct for public officials. This code prohibits appointees from engaging in activities such as purchasing state assets, misusing government funds for personal gifts, or accepting gifts exceeding GH¢20,000 without proper declaration. The code applies uniformly to all levels of government, including the Vice President, Chief of Staff, ministers, and board members, emphasizing that no official is above the law.
Public Involvement and Monitoring
To ensure adherence to these new regulations, President Mahama has announced the creation of a public portal. This platform will allow citizens to report any suspected breaches of the Code of Conduct confidentially. The administration assures that all reports will be investigated impartially, reinforcing the government’s commitment to transparency and public accountability.

India Strikes Pakistan but Is Said to Have Lost Jets
On May 6, 2025, India initiated a series of airstrikes targeting nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, citing retaliation for an April 22 attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that resulted in 26 deaths. The operation, named "Operation Sindoor," aimed at facilities allegedly linked to terrorist organizations Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba. Pakistan condemned the strikes as an "act of war," asserting that the attacks hit civilian areas, including mosques, and caused at least 31 fatalities. In response, Pakistan claimed to have shot down five Indian fighter jets and authorized its military to undertake "corresponding actions," heightening the risk of further escalation between the nuclear-armed neighbors. The situation has led to cross-border shelling, resulting in civilian casualties on both sides, and has disrupted air travel across South and Central Asia. Global leaders, including those from the U.S., U.N., China, and Russia, have called […]
