PDP Sets Sights on Jigawa as 2027 Approaches
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has officially declared its intent to unseat Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State in the 2027 general elections .
Umar Danjani, the Deputy Chairman of the state chapter of the party, made the announcement via a Facebook post on Sunday, expressing confidence in the party’s ability to reclaim power in the state.
Danjani cited several examples where opposition parties successfully unseated sitting governors, even when the president belonged to a different political party.
Historical Precedents Cited by PDP
In his post, Danjani referenced notable gubernatorial victories that defy national political trends:
- In 2019 , Ahmadu Fintiri of the PDP defeated Jibrilla Bindow of the APC in Adamawa State
- In 2015 , Abdulaziz Yari won in Zamfara State , despite the federal government being led by a PDP administration
- In 2019 , both Seyi Makinde (Oyo) and Bala Mohammed (Bauchi) retained their seats under PDP despite an APC-led presidency
These cases, he said, prove that party alignment with the presidency does not guarantee victory at the state level.
“The PDP remains confident in our chances,” Danjani stated.
“We have done it before—and we can do it again in Jigawa.”
A Look Back at the 2023 Gubernatorial Race
Governor Umar Namadi was elected in 2023 with 618,449 votes , defeating then-PDP candidate Mustapha Sule Lamido , who received 368,726 votes .
Namadi took office on May 29, 2023 , after a tightly contested race that saw strong support from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) machinery.
However, the PDP believes this margin is not insurmountable and says it will mount a stronger campaign in 2027.
PDP Eyes Comeback Amid Shifting Political Landscape
Danjani emphasized that the PDP is not deterred by the current APC dominance in Jigawa.
He urged members to focus on grassroots mobilization, youth engagement, and strategic messaging to build momentum ahead of the 2027 polls.
“Our party has proven time and again that we can win—no matter the odds,” he added.
This message signals a renewed push by the opposition to challenge APC rule beyond traditional strongholds.
