The future of Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo has been thrown into uncertainty following reports of a breakdown in his relationship with club owner Evangelos Marinakis.
Sources told BBC Sport that Nuno’s position is not completely safe, despite leading Forest to a European spot last season and starting this year’s Premier League campaign with a 3-1 victory over Brentford.
The rift has reportedly spread unease among the playing squad, who are said to be aware of the growing tension between manager and owner.
Speaking to the media on Friday, the 51-year-old admitted that “where there’s smoke, there’s fire” in response to speculation about his future.
“I always had a very good relationship with the owner – last season we were very close and spoke on a daily basis. This season it is not so well between us,” Nuno revealed.
He added:
“No, it is not good. I think everybody at the club should be together but this is not the reality.”
Nuno stressed his focus remains on the squad and the challenges of the season ahead, despite the growing disconnect at the top.
Forest have been busy in the transfer market, signing seven new players, but the sale of winger Anthony Elanga to Newcastle for £55m has raised eyebrows.
Before the Brentford clash, Nuno voiced concerns about the club’s summer recruitment:
“We have doubts, who is going to be here, when are they going to come? All these things create doubts. Not only me but in the club.”
Reports suggest Nuno has not been fully involved in transfer decisions this summer, a key factor behind the deterioration of his relationship with Marinakis.
Addressing rumors about his job security, Nuno told BBC Radio Nottingham that nothing official had been communicated to him, but he admitted players were unsettled by the speculation.
“I feel sorry. I think about the players, because today they were aware of things in the morning, and I could see it in their faces,” he said.
Still, he reassured supporters of his commitment:
“I appreciate the respect and the feelings the fans have towards me. Now that we are in Europe, I think the city’s alive. When I go out, I feel this love – and I just have to thank them.”
In May, Marinakis appeared to confront Nuno on the pitch after a 2-2 draw with Leicester. Although the club denied any confrontation, insiders believe the owner’s frustrations have lingered.
Nuno, who was appointed in December 2023, guided Forest to safety despite a four-point deduction and then achieved a historic 7th-place finish last season, securing European football for the first time in three decades.
Just two months ago, he signed a new three-year contract, with Marinakis praising their “strong and solid” relationship. But that solidity now seems to be crumbling.
