The Nigerian Medical Association has hailed the Founder and Chancellor of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, Aare Afe Babalola, for his remarkable contributions to healthcare and medical education in Nigeria. First NMA Vice President, Dr Benjamin Olowojebutu, gave the commendation on Monday while leading a high powered delegation on a courtesy visit to the university.
Olowojebutu said he was overwhelmed by the scale of investment in the 400 bed ABUAD Multi System Hospital, the Industrial Park, the Independent Power Plant and the ABUAD Enterprise Farms, describing them as uncommon achievements by a private individual. He noted that the Multi System Hospital, regarded as one of the best equipped in Sub Saharan Africa, continues to raise the bar in modern medical services.
He highlighted the presence of two functional MRI machines, a dialysis centre with affordable charges and an in house oxygen plant as clear evidence of the institution’s commitment to excellence. The NMA leader added that he was especially impressed that Babalola, who has never held political office, chose to situate such massive projects in Ekiti rather than in bigger cities, placing the state firmly on the global map.
Olowojebutu said what Babalola has done is a service to humanity that deserves promotion and support at all levels. He stressed that ABUAD’s model shows how private vision and investment can significantly strengthen Nigeria’s health and education systems.
In his response, Afe Babalola thanked the NMA leadership for the visit and reflected on the decline in national standards compared to the early post independence years. He explained that the success of ABUAD sprang from his desire to institutionalise quality, functional education despite ending formal schooling at Standard VI.
Babalola noted that the university’s vision has been validated by its ranking among the world’s top 100 universities in the 2025 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings and its status as Nigeria’s best university for four consecutive years. He urged wealthy Nigerians to invest meaningfully in education and health, saying even small acts of kindness can transform lives.
