
NiMet Predicts Widespread Rain and Thunderstorms
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned that thunderstorms and heavy rains will affect many parts of Nigeria from Saturday to Monday .
This weather outlook was released on Friday in Abuja and shared by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The forecast covers all regions of the country, with varying intensity and timing across states.
Saturday: Storms Begin in the North and Central Zones
Early on Saturday, thunderstorms were expected in parts of:
- Taraba
- Kebbi
- Zamfara
- Kaduna
- Adamawa
Later in the day, thunderstorms with rain were likely in:
- Borno, Sokoto, Gombe, and Bauchi
In the North-Central region , early morning storms were predicted for:
- Benue, Plateau, Niger, FCT, and Nasarawa
By afternoon, thunderstorms and rain were expected to spread to:
- FCT, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, Kwara, Kogi, and Plateau
Cloudy skies with morning rain were also reported in parts of the South , including:
- Enugu, Ebonyi, Cross River, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Bayelsa
Isolated thunderstorms later in the day were expected in most southern states.
Sunday: Storms Continue Across Multiple States
Morning thunderstorms were expected again in parts of:
- Kaduna, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba
By afternoon, more storms and rain were predicted in:
- Taraba, Adamawa, Kebbi, Kaduna, Zamfara, Gombe, and Bauchi
In the North-Central zone , clouds with sunshine breaks were expected, followed by thunderstorms in:
- Kogi, Kwara, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, and FCT
Southern states like Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River were expected to see morning thunderstorms.
Later in the day, scattered thunderstorms with rain were likely across most southern areas.
Monday: More Rain and Thunderstorms Expected
Thunderstorms were expected early in parts of:
- Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba
By afternoon, storms with heavy rain were likely in:
- Taraba, Adamawa, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Zamfara, Gombe, Kaduna, and Bauchi
In the North-Central , clouds and sunshine were expected, followed by thunderstorms in:
- FCT, Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi, and Niger
Storms were also expected in the afternoon or evening in:
- Kwara, Plateau, Nasarawa, Niger, Benue, and Kogi
In the South , cloudy conditions with morning rain were predicted for:
- Ogun, Edo, Ondo, Delta, and Bayelsa
More isolated thunderstorms with rain were expected later in the day across most southern states.
Public Advised to Take Precautions
NiMet urged the public to take safety measures ahead of the stormy weather.
Strong winds may come before the rain in affected areas.
Residents were advised to:
- Secure loose objects to prevent damage
- Avoid driving in heavy rain
- Disconnect electrical appliances
- Stay away from tall trees
Airline operators were told to check airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for safe flight planning.
Citizens were encouraged to stay updated through the NiMet website at www.nimet.gov.ng .
