The Nigerian entertainment industry is in mourning following the death of Akinloye Tofowomo, popularly known as Akiin Shuga, the celebrated live band leader and founder of Shuga Band.
He passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2025, in New Brunswick, Canada, at the age of 50.
In a statement, his family described him as a “revered music icon, Grandmaster, and custodian of rhythm, culture, and the spirit of performance.”
Born on January 6, 1975, in Ile-Oluji, Ondo State, Akiin Shuga defied polio to become one of Nigeria’s most respected and enduring live music performers.
He founded Shuga Band in 1998, starting with small gigs at Pintos Bar in Ikeja, Lagos. What began as a modest group evolved into a 14-member ensemble known for its electrifying performances at weddings, corporate functions, and state events. His company, Shuga Entertainment, became synonymous with professionalism and excellence in Nigeria’s live performance industry.
Akiin Shuga also served as the founder and President of the Association of Music Band Owners of Nigeria (AMBON), where he championed better welfare and standards for live musicians.
Known for his attention to detail and passion for authentic connection, he often reminded his team:
“We don’t perform to impress; we perform to connect.”
Reke Ofano, current band leader of Shuga Band, paid tribute to his mentor, describing him as a perfectionist with a compassionate soul.
“Shuga never accepted mediocrity. He pushed everyone to be better, but he also cared deeply. He knew everyone’s story and made us all feel like family,” Ofano said.
Akiin Shuga studied Music Business at Berklee College of Music, Boston, USA, before returning to Nigeria to modernise live music. He pioneered innovations such as brand collaborations, choreographed performances, and digital sound engineering, which elevated Nigeria’s live entertainment scene.
Beyond his musical achievements, Akiin Shuga was a passionate advocate for people living with disabilities. As a polio survivor, he established the Shuga Limb Foundation to support those with limb challenges and was appointed Rotary International District Polio Ambassador in 2018.
One of his most memorable lyrics reads:
“Every rhythm tells a story.”
Akiin Shuga’s story—of courage, melody, and resilience—will continue to inspire generations. His rhythm lives on in the countless hearts he touched and every stage he graced with his indomitable spirit.
