Tributes are pouring in for Nigerian footballer Saburi Olayinka Adeniji, who has died in the United Kingdom from a catastrophic brain injury.
Adeniji, a winger for non league side Kings Park Rangers in Halstead, Essex, passed away in hospital on Friday after being admitted to intensive care on January 25 with a severe brain stem injury. His wife and four year old daughter travelled from Nigeria to be by his side but arrived a day after his death.
Medical staff were reported to have delayed switching off life support in the hope that his family would arrive in time to say goodbye. The club confirmed his death in an emotional statement, saying he “fought so hard to still be here” and describing him as a beloved friend, dad, husband, brother and son.
A fundraising appeal launched to support his family has raised over £16,000 of its £17,000 target. The money will help cover emergency visa applications, travel and accommodation costs, and provide financial support for his wife and daughter.
The Essex and Suffolk Border League club waived gate fees in recent weeks, directing all proceeds to the family fund and holding a minute’s silence before their match against Henley Athletic. A separate fundraising event was also organised to honour Adeniji’s memory and assist his loved ones.
Organisers of the appeal highlighted his devotion to his family, noting that he worked tirelessly to provide for them and was determined to secure a good education and better future for his young daughter. They called on the wider football community to come together to support the bereaved family at this difficult time.
