New York, Sept. 20, 2025 — Nigeria joined 144 other United Nations member states on Saturday in supporting a resolution that allows Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to address the UN General Assembly via a pre-recorded video message after the United States denied visas to his delegation.
The measure passed with 145 votes in favor, five against, and six abstentions. Opposing votes came from the United States, Israel, Nauru, Palau, and Paraguay, while countries including Albania, Fiji, Hungary, North Macedonia, Panama, and Papua New Guinea abstained.
Under the resolution, Abbas’s speech will be introduced by a Palestinian representative based in New York. He and other Palestinian officials will also be permitted to deliver remarks virtually during the ongoing 80th UN session, including at high-level meetings on the two-State solution.
Nigeria’s Position
Nigeria’s UN envoy said the country backed the resolution to ensure Palestine’s participation in “critical deliberations on peace and the two-State solution.”
“The ability to participate, even virtually, reflects the UN’s commitment to inclusive dialogue and multilateralism,” the envoy stated.
Wider Context
The U.S. Department of State announced on August 29 that it would not issue visas for Abbas’s delegation, citing national security concerns and accusing the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) and Palestinian Authority (PA) of undermining peace prospects in the past.
A Palestinian representative at the UN welcomed the resolution, calling it “a reaffirmation that political dialogue and participation cannot be curtailed by unilateral restrictions.”
Separately, the Assembly also adopted — without a vote — a Saudi-sponsored measure allowing Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to deliver a video message at a high-level conference on September 22.
Key Takeaway
The decision underscores strong global support for Palestine’s right to participate in UN debates despite U.S. opposition. For Nigeria, it signals continued alignment with multilateralism and inclusive diplomacy, especially on sensitive issues such as Middle East peace.

Iran attack on Qatar gas hub triggers Trump threat and energy price spike
Qatar has reported extensive damage at the Ras Laffan liquefied natural gas hub after Iranian missile and drone strikes, raising fresh fears for global energy supplies . Tehran said it attacked the giant LNG facility in retaliation for an Israeli strike on Iran’s South Pars gas field, which forms part of the world’s largest natural gas reservoir shared with Qatar . Oil prices jumped about five percent and European gas prices surged roughly 35 percent as markets reacted to the risk of prolonged disruption to gas exports from the Gulf . US President Donald Trump warned Iran to stop attacking Qatar, threatening that the United States would massively blow up the entire South Pars gas field if Tehran continued its strikes . In a social media post, Trump said Washington knew nothing about Israel’s earlier attack on South Pars, describing […]

US intel says China not planning 2027 Taiwan invasion
China does not have a plan to invade Taiwan in 2027 and has set no fixed deadline to take the island by force, according to a new annual threat assessment released by the United States intelligence community . The report says Beijing still wants eventual unification with Taiwan but prefers to achieve this goal without going to war, even as it continues to modernise its armed forces and increase pressure on the island . US agencies noted that some American defence officials had previously pointed to 2027 as a possible window for a Chinese attack, but the latest assessment concludes there is no current operational plan for an invasion in that year . Instead, the report says that in 2026 and beyond, China is likely to keep using political, economic and military tools to squeeze Taiwan and shape conditions for […]

Nigeria spends N32.8trn on defence in 15 years as insecurity persists
Nigeria has spent about N32.88 trillion on defence in the last 15 years, roughly 12.5 percent of total national budgets of N262.834 trillion over the period, yet insecurity remains widespread across the country . Based on official budget exchange rates, the N32.88 trillion translates to about 44.64 billion dollars, but communities across several regions still face insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, communal clashes and oil related violence . Security trackers estimate that more than 100,000 Nigerians have been killed in violent incidents and conflict related attacks since 2012, with thousands abducted and millions displaced from their homes . In 2026 alone, at least 1,091 people were reported killed in violent attacks in the first 41 days of the year, while about 3.726 million Nigerians are currently displaced and living in roughly 3,900 camps nationwide . The recent suicide bombings in Maiduguri, Borno […]

Pomp and splendour as King Charles hosts Tinubu and wife at historic UK state visit
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu were hosted with pomp and splendour by King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle, marking the first state visit by a Nigerian leader to the United Kingdom in 37 years . Military President Ibrahim Babangida was the last Nigerian leader to pay a state visit in 1989, following earlier state visits by former President Shehu Shagari in 1981 and General Yakubu Gowon, all of whom were hosted by the late Queen Elizabeth II . Tinubu and his wife were received by senior royals, including Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, before being escorted to meet the King and Queen for the formal welcome . Because the visit coincides with Ramadan, there was no traditional lunch with the King, but the President and First Lady were still treated to […]

Tehran Residents Live in Fear Amid Airstrikes
Residents of Tehran are living in a state of constant tension as airstrikes and drone attacks hit the city, leaving many fearful for their lives. Footage and testimonies obtained by the BBC reveal a population on edge, always anticipating the next explosion. Baran, a businesswoman in her thirties who requested her name be changed, describes her life as a daily gamble. “With the start of drone attacks, no one dares to go outside. Stepping out of my door feels like risking my life,” she says. She remains in constant contact with friends, tracking each other’s safety, even when silence alone feels threatening. The city’s recent unrest has compounded these fears. Following nationwide protests demanding change in January, thousands of Iranians were killed in a brutal crackdown. Many, like Baran, feel their hopes for reform have been shattered. Security measures are […]

Zelensky warns of missile shortage amid conflicts
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that his country could soon face a shortage of key missiles due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which is diverting military resources away from Ukraine. In an interview with BBC News, Zelensky said the escalation involving United States, Israel and Iran risks weakening Ukraine’s defence efforts. According to him, Russian President Vladimir Putin stands to benefit from a prolonged conflict in the Middle East, as it shifts global attention and resources away from Kyiv. Zelensky expressed concern that peace negotiations with Russia are being delayed, attributing the slowdown largely to the unfolding crisis in Iran. He also noted that rising global energy prices—driven by regional instability—are working in Moscow’s favour while putting additional pressure on Ukraine. A major issue highlighted by the Ukrainian leader is the potential shortage of air defence […]

Iran faces uncertainty after Larijani killing
The death of Ali Larijani, Iran’s senior security official, in an Israeli air strike marks a major turning point for the country’s leadership at a highly sensitive time. Although not a military commander, he played a decisive role in shaping Iran’s strategic direction on security, diplomacy, and conflict. As secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Larijani was deeply involved in key decisions regarding Iran’s stance toward both United States and Israel. His influence extended across the political system, making him one of the most important figures behind the country’s policy choices. Following the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in late February, Larijani adopted a firm position, indicating that Iran was prepared to sustain a prolonged conflict. His own death now adds to a series of targeted strikes that have eliminated several high-ranking officials and commanders in recent weeks, […]
