In a meaningful effort to promote girls’ health and menstrual hygiene in Nigeria , the DIACONIA Intervention for Human Development Foundation , an Abuja and U.S.-based non-governmental organization, has distributed essential sanitary products to over 300 adolescent girls in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State .
The initiative formed part of activities marking International Children’s Day 2025 , with the goal of addressing the challenges many young girls face regarding menstrual health and personal hygiene.
A Special Day for Young Girls
The event was graced by Mrs. Juliana Manzo Daniel Maigari , wife of the Executive Chairman of Kachia Local Government, who served as the Special Guest of Honour .
She emphasized the importance of educating adolescent girls about their bodies and menstrual cycles, noting that poor menstrual hygiene remains a significant contributor to health issues among young women—especially in rural communities.
“Parents must cultivate the habit of educating their daughters on menstrual cycle and hygiene management,” she said. “This is not just about health—it’s about dignity.”
She also praised the efforts of DIACONIA Foundation , applauding its commitment to improving the lives of underprivileged children and women across Nigeria.
Empowering Through Education and Support
Mr. Samaila Gaude, Director of Administration at DIACONIA, explained that the foundation’s mission is rooted in humanitarian service and restoring human dignity through impactful programs in education, health, agriculture, and youth empowerment .
He highlighted the foundation’s achievements, which include:
- Providing free medical care to over 5,000 people
- Offering scholarships to more than 300 students
- Facilitating job opportunities for 50 youths
- Supporting 20 farmers with agricultural inputs
“This distribution is one of many interventions we are making this year,” Gaude stated. “We remain committed to supporting the underprivileged, especially our young girls, through sustainable and life-changing initiatives.”
Managing Menstruation: A Key to Female Empowerment
The guest speaker, Mrs. Helen Samuel Musa , delivered an insightful presentation titled “Managing Menstrual Cycle and Hygiene” , where she underscored the importance of proper menstrual hygiene as a vital component of female development and reproductive health.
She encouraged girls to maintain good hygiene practices such as:
- Washing hands regularly
- Changing sanitary pads every 3–4 hours
- Using quality sanitary products consistently
“Menstruation is natural and should not be a barrier to school, sport, or dreams,” she said. “It’s time we normalize conversations around periods and break the stigma surrounding them.”
What Was Distributed?
Each girl received a hygiene pack containing:
- 32 sanitary pads
- Toothpaste and toothbrush
- Roll-on deodorant
- Shaving sticks
- Antiseptic soap
- Other essential personal care items
These kits were designed not only to meet immediate needs but also to encourage healthy habits and self-confidence among the beneficiaries.
