Tinubu Renames University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University
President Bola Tinubu has renamed the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) to the Muhammadu Buhari University of Maiduguri , as part of a formal tribute to the late former Nigerian leader during a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session on Thursday.
The renaming decision was announced during an FEC meeting held specifically to honor Buhari’s life and service to the nation.
The event brought together top government officials, including:
- Senate President Godswill Akpabio
- House Speaker Abbas Tajudeen
- Several state governors
- Federal ministers
- Head of the Civil Service of the Federation
All paid tribute to Buhari’s legacy as a military Head of State and democratically elected President (2015–2023) .
“Buhari’s Legacy Lives in Education” – Alausa
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa , praised the decision to immortalize Buhari’s legacy through education.
In a statement issued on Friday and shared by the Ministry’s Director of Press, Boriowo Folasade , Alausa said:
“We are deeply honoured that the education sector has been chosen as the channel through which the late President’s legacy will be permanently enshrined.”
He described the gesture as a reflection of Tinubu’s empathy, respect, and belief in education as a driver of national progress.
“President Tinubu sees education as the bedrock of national renewal—just like President Buhari did.”
Alausa added that the renaming highlights the administration’s view of education as a cornerstone of sustainable development and national identity.
Ministry Commits To Upholding Buhari’s Values
Alausa reaffirmed the Federal Ministry of Education’s commitment to advancing the values of:
- Service
- Integrity
- Excellence
He said these were the guiding principles of both President Tinubu and the late Buhari , and will remain central to the new university’s mission.
“This is more than a name—it’s a promise to uphold the ideals of leadership and service.”
He added that the move sends a strong signal that education remains a top national priority .
