Mahama launches One Million Coders Program to equip Ghanaian youth with digital skills

Article arrow_drop_down

At the official launch on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama unveiled a digital skills training initiative as a key component of his administration’s Reset Ghana agenda. The program aims to prepare Ghanaians for stronger participation in the global digital economy.

“This is more than just a fulfilled campaign promise,” Mahama stated. “It is a strategic effort to build a knowledge-based economy—one that empowers our people to innovate, secure jobs, and compete on a global scale.”

The initiative is designed to combat youth unemployment and unlock new avenues for innovation and entrepreneurship. Mahama revealed that the first batch of 560 participants has already commenced training in Accra, Kumasi, Sunyani, and Bolgatanga. Within just 48 hours of announcing the program, over 90,000 applications were received—an indication, he said, of young Ghanaians’ eagerness to gain practical digital skills.

He emphasized the program’s inclusive nature, highlighting its accessibility to women, rural populations, and persons with disabilities.

“We are not merely training the youth,” he said. “We are reshaping our national narrative—from passive consumers of imported technology to active creators of our own solutions.”

Mahama also shared his vision of positioning Ghana as a preferred destination for business process outsourcing (BPO), citing the country’s English-speaking population, strategic location, and digitally inclined youth as key competitive advantages.

He pointed to global examples like Estonia, the UK, Finland, Japan, and the United States—nations that have integrated coding into early education—and stated that Ghana would adopt and adapt such best practices to suit local contexts.

Beyond technical training, the initiative also seeks to cultivate critical soft skills such as problem-solving, analytical thinking, and teamwork—qualities Mahama described as essential in today’s rapidly evolving world.

To expand access nationwide, the government plans to establish training centers in all 261 districts, leveraging existing community information centers as hubs for digital learning.

Another key concern was improving accessibility to hydrants, especially during emergencies, as the Tema Region continues to face significant fire risks. Notably, areas like Tema New-Town remain particularly vulnerable due to […]
