Liverpool have contacted the representatives of former midfielder Xabi Alonso to ask about his availability for a possible return to Anfield in the near future. The 44‑year‑old, who recently left Real Madrid by mutual consent after a difficult spell in charge, is said to have given a positive response to the initial approach from his old club.
Alonso had previously turned down opportunities from both Bayern Munich and Liverpool in the spring of 2024, choosing instead to remain at Bayer Leverkusen, where he was enjoying a successful project. Liverpool’s latest move is described as an attempt to anticipate future developments and determine whether they can realistically count on him as a managerial option.
The club’s hierarchy are balancing longstanding respect for Alonso’s legacy as a player with ongoing admiration for current manager Arne Slot, who remains in charge despite recent setbacks. Reports in Spanish outlet AS say Alonso began to sense his Real Madrid job was in danger after losing the Super Cup to Barcelona in Jeddah, despite believing he could still turn results around.
A brief break from management over the last two weeks has allowed Alonso to reset and reflect on his next step. The idea of returning to Merseyside, where he became a fan favourite two decades ago, is understood to be appealing to him as he weighs up his options.

Middle East crisis: NLC demands COLA, wage award, tax relief
The Nigeria Labour Congress has asked the Federal Government to introduce immediate measures such as cost of living allowance, wage awards and tax relief to cushion the impact of the ongoing Middle East crisis on Nigerian workers. The union said rising global tensions have worsened fuel prices, transport costs and inflation, deepening hardship for salaries that were already inadequate. NLC President Joe Ajaero noted that workers were struggling even before the latest spike in energy costs and warned that many households can no longer cope without urgent support. He explained that the current N70,000 minimum wage has been overtaken by inflation and does not reflect the real cost of food, transport, housing and basic services. The NLC is therefore pushing for a cost of living allowance to be paid on top of existing wages so that workers can absorb sudden price shocks.Ajaero […]

In a phone call with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi urged France and other nations to refrain from any action that might expand the fighting. He cautioned that further militarisation of the Gulf could push the region toward a confrontation that would be difficult to control. Iran has previously said it is prepared for a prolonged conflict with the United States and Israel and warned that such a war could severely damage or even “destroy” the global economy. The country […]
