Nana Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng, a revered figure in Ghana’s media landscape and former Chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC), passed away on Monday, May 26, 2025, in London at the age of 74. He had been undergoing treatment since February.
Career Highlights
With a journalism career spanning over 45 years, Gyan-Apenteng began at the Daily Graphic in 1982, advancing to roles such as Foreign News Editor and acting Editor. He later became the editor of The Mirror, introducing enduring news features.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he served as deputy editor of the London-based West Africa magazine and co-founded Ghana News magazine. He also founded African Topics, a Pan-African publication focused on governance and human rights.
Upon returning to Ghana in the 1990s, he led communications at the Third World Network and edited its monthly magazine, Africa Agenda. He served as a media trainer and communication consultant for organizations including MTN Ghana, UN agencies, the Media Foundation for West Africa, and STAR Ghana.
Leadership Roles
Gyan-Apenteng was Chairman of the 8th National Media Commission from November 2015 to November 2018. He also served as President of the Ghana Association of Writers and held the traditional title of Apagyahene of Tafo Eti in the Eastern Region.
Education and Personal Life
An alumnus of Apam Secondary School and the University of Ghana, Legon, he also attended Okuapeman Secondary School. He is survived by six children. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
