The Kano State Government has announced the temporary suspension of its monthly environmental sanitation exercise for April. This decision aims to facilitate the smooth conduct of the ongoing Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examinations across the state.
The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru Hashim, through a statement issued by Ismail Gwammaja, the Director of Public Enlightenment at the ministry.
Why the Suspension Was Necessary
According to the statement, the suspension followed consultations with key stakeholders to avoid any disruptions that could hinder candidates participating in the nationwide exams.
“The suspension is aimed at preventing any potential disruptions to the examination process and ensuring that candidates can sit for their exams without any hindrance,” the statement read.
The monthly sanitation exercise, which typically restricts movement on the last Saturday of each month, could have posed challenges for JAMB candidates traveling to exam centers. By suspending the exercise, the government seeks to prioritize the success of students taking this critical national exam.
Government Assures Resumption of Sanitation in May
While announcing the suspension, Dr. Hashim assured residents that the sanitation exercise would resume fully in May 2025. He appealed to the public to understand the rationale behind the decision and continue supporting government efforts to maintain environmental hygiene.
“Even though the formal exercise is suspended this month, we urge residents to refrain from indiscriminate waste disposal and support sanitation officials in keeping our state clean,” he added.
The Importance of the Monthly Sanitation Exercise
The monthly sanitation exercise is a key initiative by the Kano State Government to promote environmental cleanliness. Typically observed on the last Saturday of each month, it involves restricting movement for several hours to allow residents and sanitation workers to clean their surroundings.
This initiative has played a significant role in improving environmental hygiene across the state. However, the government recognizes the need to balance such programs with other pressing priorities, such as the JAMB exams, which are crucial for students seeking admission into tertiary institutions.
