Families of Israeli hostages held in Gaza are urging a nationwide general strike next Sunday to protest the government’s decision to expand military operations and seize Gaza City.
“We are shutting down the country to save the soldiers and the hostages,” said relatives gathered in Tel Aviv, joined by the October 7 Council, which represents families of soldiers killed at the start of the war.
Grassroots Push Gains Momentum
Organizers say the strike will begin as a citizen-led movement, driven by private companies and individuals taking the day off to disrupt the economy.
- The October 7 Council claims hundreds of companies and thousands of citizens have already pledged participation.
- Israel’s largest trade union, Histadrut, has yet to commit but will meet with the families on Monday.
Anat Angrest, whose son Matan is among the hostages, appealed directly to industry leaders:
“Your silence is killing our children. You have the power to act.”
Union and Political Support in Question
The Histadrut staged a general strike in 2024 after six hostages were killed by Hamas, disrupting transport, banking, and healthcare before the government intervened with a labor court injunction.
- This time, the union has stayed silent so far.
- Opposition leaders Yair Lapid and Yair Golan have endorsed the strike, urging Israelis to “resist and disrupt” in solidarity.
Criticism of War Expansion
The strike call comes after the Israeli security cabinet approved a controversial plan to take over Gaza City, despite warnings it could endanger the remaining 50 hostages — about 20 believed to be alive.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the move, saying:
“This is the best way to end the war and the best way to end it speedily.”

Ghana to Declare 21 Marine Protected Areas Starting at Greater Cape Three Points
Ghana is preparing to declare 21 coastal communities as Marine Protected Areas in a major step toward restoring marine biodiversity and strengthening fisheries management. The first declaration is expected to take place at Greater Cape Three Points in the Western Region. Once designated, fishing activities within the protected zones will be restricted to allow depleted fish stocks to recover. Part of the Global 30×30 Target The move forms part of Ghana’s commitment to the global 30×30 target, which calls for the protection of at least 30 percent of the world’s land and ocean areas by 2030. The goal falls under Target 3 of the Global Biodiversity Framework and has been adopted by more than 190 countries. Despite the widespread commitment, progress remains slow. Since 2022, global reviews show that only about 2.9 percent of the ocean is fully or highly […]

Haaland’s agent dismisses Barcelona transfer rumours
Erling Haaland’s agent, Rafaela Pimenta, has rubbished reports linking the Manchester City striker with a summer move to Barcelona, insisting there has been no contact with the Catalan club. Recent speculation in Spain suggested that Barca presidential hopeful Victor Font and other figures around the club were exploring a deal to lure Haaland to Camp Nou in the coming seasons. Some reports claimed that Barcelona had already started sounding out the player’s camp. But speaking in an interview with Spanish TV show El Chiringuito, Pimenta said there is “a lot of respect and admiration” for Barcelona, yet no one from the club or any presidential candidate has made contact about a transfer. She stressed that Haaland is “very happy” at Manchester City and fully focused on his current project under Pep Guardiola. The agent also pointed out that the Norwegian […]

World number one Aryna Sabalenka continued her dominant form at Indian Wells, reaching the semi finals with a straight sets win over Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko. Sabalenka prevailed 7–6(0), 6–4 in one hour and 51 minutes, but was pushed hard by the 19 year old 10th seed, who recently won the 2025 Canadian Open and is regarded as one of the brightest young talents on the WTA Tour. The Belarusian did not drop serve, landing 94 percent of her first serves and saving all five break points she faced to secure a fourth straight Indian Wells semi final. She will next face Czech player Linda Noskova, who ended the impressive run of Australia’s Talia Gibson with a 6–2, 4–6, 6–2 victory to book her own place in the last four. EPL: Spurs fight for survival as Arsenal gear up for title charge
Tottenham Hotspur travel to Liverpool on Sunday desperately searching for salvation in their fight against relegation, while Premier League leaders Arsenal look primed for another push in the title race. Spurs have lost their last six matches in all competitions, the worst run in the club’s history. Igor Tudor’s side sit 16th, just one point above West Ham and Nottingham Forest, and could drop closer to the bottom three if results go against them before they kick off at Anfield. The north Londoners were thrashed 5–2 by Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie in midweek, a chaotic night in which Tudor substituted goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky after just 17 minutes following two costly errors. With only nine league games left and no win in their last 11, Tottenham know they must “dig deeper” to […]

Man City outclass Newcastle to reach FA Cup quarters
Manchester City delivered a dominant performance to beat Newcastle United 3–1 at St James’ Park and book their place in the FA Cup quarter finals. Pep Guardiola made sweeping changes, rotating 10 players from the side that drew with Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, yet his much changed team still had too much quality for the hosts. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe made four changes of his own after their late win over Manchester United, handing match winner Will Osula a rare start. Newcastle started strongly and were rewarded when Harvey Barnes gave them the lead with a smart finish after being picked out by Sandro Tonali. The advantage did not last long, however, as City levelled in bizarre fashion before half time when Jeremy Doku’s low ball ran through the box and Savinho allowed it to bounce off his […]

The game against Millwall was his first club appearance of 2026 as he continues his comeback to full fitness. Playing at the MKM Stadium, Hull City fell behind when Jake Cooper scored for Millwall from close range after a set piece situation. The hosts drew level through Joe Gelhardt, who finished from inside the box following a well worked move. Millwall, however, regained control in the second half. Mihailo Ivanovic restored their lead with a close range effort before Josh Coburn sealed the […]

Arsenal edge Mansfield to reach FA Cup quarter finals
Arsenal battled past a spirited Mansfield Town side to win 2–1 away and secure a place in the FA Cup quarter finals. The victory keeps alive their push for a historic quadruple this season. Mikel Arteta heavily rotated his team for the fifth round tie, making nine changes from the side that beat Brighton in midweek and switching to a back three. His line up included teenagers Max Dowman and Marli Salmon, making Arsenal the first Premier League club to start a competitive game with two players aged 16 or under. Despite early pressure from the League One club, Arsenal took the lead just before half time. Noni Madueke saw his initial shot saved but curled the rebound into the far corner to register the Gunners’ 100th goal of the season in all competitions. Mansfield responded strongly after the break.
