The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has met with the Special Operations Team deployed to Bole and surrounding areas in the Savannah Region to review measures aimed at restoring peace and security.
The meeting, held at the Savannah Regional Police Headquarters in Damongo, followed the IGP’s emergency visit last week after violent clashes in Gbiniyiri left at least 31 people dead and dozens injured. According to figures from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), about 1,500 people have been displaced since the violence erupted on August 24, 2025. Days later, on August 28, eight people drowned in the Volta River while attempting to flee the conflict.
Security in the area has since been reinforced with additional police and military personnel. The Special Operations Team has been tasked with community patrols, intelligence gathering, and conflict prevention to stabilise the situation and prevent further violence.
Addressing the team, IGP Yohuno urged them to remain professional, disciplined, and committed to their duties. He stressed vigilance, proactive policing, and ethical conduct as essential to securing lasting peace. He also encouraged effective collaboration with other security agencies to enhance coordination and efficiency.
The IGP directed intensified daily patrols, particularly along boundary areas of Bole where displacement has occurred, to strengthen security and reassure affected communities. So far, the team’s presence has contributed to restoring order and public confidence.
As part of broader peace-building efforts, President John Mahama has dispatched a government delegation led by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohamed-Mubarak to meet with the Yagbonwura and other key stakeholders. The President, who was briefed by national security officials upon returning from a state visit to Singapore, also spoke directly with the Yagbonwura by phone to discuss solutions.
In a statement, Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu said the President has urged all parties to support ongoing initiatives to end the conflict and restore normalcy. The delegation has been tasked to work closely with the Regional Security Council, traditional leaders, and community representatives to promote dialogue and peacefully resolve disputes.
