
IGP Denounces Benue Massacre as Threat to National Unity
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun , has strongly condemned the deadly attack on the Yelwata community in Benue State , where over 200 people were killed .
He described the violence as mindless terrorism , not just against Benue, but as a direct threat to Nigeria’s national sovereignty and integrity .
Egbetokun made the remarks during a visit to the state to assess the security situation firsthand.
He pledged stronger coordination among security agencies to restore peace and stability to the troubled region.
“Bandits Will Soon Be a Thing of the Past” – IGP
Speaking directly to the perpetrators, Egbetokun said:
“Bandits operating with impunity will soon be a thing of the past.”
He added that the day would come when they would no longer return after attacks.
“That day is fast approaching.”
He expressed deep sympathy to the victims and their families, stating:
“I am here in Benue to commiserate with you, the government, and all affected citizens.”
On behalf of the Nigerian Police Force, he extended heartfelt condolences to the people of Benue and reaffirmed the force’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
President Tinubu Committed to Ending Violence – IGP
The IGP also conveyed a message from President Bola Tinubu , who was said to be deeply saddened by the latest wave of violence in Benue.
He assured that the Federal Government remains fully committed to ending the reign of terror and criminality across the country.
“The president is determined to put an end to this menace,” Egbetokun stated.
Police Pledge Support, Deploy More Resources
Egbetokun acknowledged the serious security challenges facing Benue, especially in border communities , and assured residents that more police personnel and resources would be deployed.
“We may not be at every inch of the state, but we are committed to working closely with sister agencies to ensure protection.”
He emphasized that collaboration between the police, military, and other forces is critical to restoring lasting peace.
Governor Alia: We Are Bleeding, But Hope Remains
Benue State Governor, Fr. Hyacinth Alia , thanked the IGP and President Tinubu for their swift response to the crisis.
“We are bleeding, we are in sorrow, we are not sleeping again—but seeing you gives us hope.”
He praised the IGP’s visit and reassurance as timely and morale-boosting for the people of Benue.
“Your presence rekindles the hope of our people that they are not alone in this fight.”
Governor Alia noted that while efforts had reduced the number of affected local governments from 17 to 6 , there had been a recent surge in violence over the last two months.
However, with federal support and directives from the presidency, he expressed confidence that peace would eventually return.
“The sorrowful narratives will become things of the past.”
