Actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has generated more than N6 billion at the Nigerian box office in the last five years, confirming her status as one of Nollywood’s most successful producers. In that period, she has repeatedly broken records and now dominates the list of the country’s highest grossing films.
Her latest film, Behind The Scenes, has grossed over N1.7 billion in less than a month, making it the highest earning Nigerian movie in history and the biggest film of 2025. The movie has also added over €90,000 from UK cinemas, further boosting its overall tally.
Before Behind The Scenes, Akindele hit major milestones with Everybody Loves Jenifa, which crossed about N1.8 billion at the box office and set new domestic records. Earlier hits such as Battle on Buka Street and Omo Ghetto: The Saga earned around N668 million and N636 million respectively, cementing her reputation as a bankable star and producer.
Industry observers say her success has expanded cinema culture, raised expectations for Nigerian films and proven that female led productions can dominate the market. With her films now occupying most of the top spots on Nigeria’s all time box office chart, Funke Akindele is widely described as the undisputed queen of the Nigerian box office.

A Lagos based arts foundation has announced plans to stage what it describes as Africa’s first ever Music Hall of Fame induction ceremony to celebrate the continent’s most influential artists and preserve their legacy. The initiative aims to create a formal African platform similar in spirit to global institutions like the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
