Al-Mustapha Enters 2027 Presidential Race
Former Chief Security Officer to late military Head of State General Sani Abacha , Major Hamza Al-Mustapha (rtd) , has officially declared his intention to run for president in the 2027 general elections .
He made the announcement on Tuesday during a political gathering with the Social Democratic Party (SDP) state executive committee and supporters in Minna, Niger State .
Al-Mustapha, who previously ran under the Action Alliance in 2023, recently joined the SDP in March 2025 , signaling a new chapter in his political journey.
“Nigeria Can Rise Again” – Al-Mustapha Vows
Speaking at the event, Al-Mustapha said he was deeply concerned about Nigeria’s current state.
“I am pained by what I see. But with the right leadership, Nigeria can rise again.”
He pledged to offer leadership built on integrity, national unity , and purposeful governance .
“Though the road ahead may be rough, together we can rebuild the Nigeria we all deserve.”
He added that the Minna meeting marked the start of a broader consultation tour aimed at building support nationwide ahead of the 2027 polls.
A statement from his campaign director of media and ICT, Jubril Umar Sanda , confirmed that Al-Mustapha is ready for the challenge.
“He is fully prepared for this journey—ready to serve with courage, integrity, and a clear plan for progress.”
Stops in Minna, Sympathizes With Flood Victims
Earlier in the day, Al-Mustapha briefly visited Minna , where he expressed solidarity with victims of recent flooding that displaced over 200 people and damaged homes and farmland in Mokwa Local Government Area .
“Our country needs leaders who act decisively in times of crisis,” he said.
He used the opportunity to stress the need for competent leadership that prioritizes solutions to national problems like climate disasters, insecurity, and economic decline.
SDP Hails Declaration as Turning Point
The SDP State Chairman, Alhaji Buhari Yakubu Yarima , welcomed Al-Mustapha’s entry into the race.
“This is a turning point for our party.”
He expressed confidence that the SDP would grow into a major political force in 2027.
“With credible candidates and a clear vision, the SDP will be a force to reckon with.”
