The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has weighed in on the ongoing public debate regarding the proposed substitution of the Twi word “Akwaaba” with the Ga expression “Oobakɛ” at the Kotoka International Airport and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.
In a press statement, the Minister acknowledged the concerns of the Ga people, describing them as legitimate since they are custodians of the land on which the capital city stands. She reiterated her commitment to preserving the Ga language, traditions, and cultural identity for future generations.
“The Ga people, as the custodians of the land on which our capital city stands, have every right to raise concerns about the preservation and promotion of their cultural heritage. I remain fully committed to ensuring that their linguistic and cultural legacy is respected, protected and preserved,” she stated.
At the same time, Madam Ocloo emphasized the importance of unity in diversity, stressing that Ghana’s strength lies in the peaceful coexistence of its many ethnic groups. She assured that just as Ga concerns are valid, the views of other ethnic groups, including Ashantis and Ewes, would also be given equal attention in the interest of national harmony.
Drawing from her personal experience, the Minister highlighted her marriage to an Ewe and the fact that her children proudly bear Ewe names as an example of Ghana’s unique cultural diversity. She firmly rejected any attempt to portray the debate as tribal or divisive.
“This government is here to serve all Ghanaians without bias. Decisions concerning culture and heritage must be taken with sensitivity, broad consultation, and the national interest at heart,” she stressed.
She assured stakeholders that the government would engage widely on the issue and adopt a balanced approach that honors the Ga-Dangme heritage while safeguarding national unity.
“The preservation of Ga culture is not in opposition to national cohesion. Rather, it is an integral part of our collective identity,” Madam Ocloo added.
The Minister concluded with a call for peace, dialogue, and inclusiveness as Ghana works to uphold both its cultural heritage and national development agenda.
