Energy Ministry Dismisses Aviation Fuel Shortage Reports

Article arrow_drop_down

Reports have circulated that Ghana is facing a shortage of Aviation Turbine Kerosene (ATK), potentially disrupting airline operations—prompting concerns that flights could be grounded due to depleted fuel reserves.

What We Found

  • The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition officially denied any ATK shortage in a statement on July 24, 2025, reassuring stakeholders that sufficient fuel is available for aircraft operations.
  • Ghana recently received an ATK shipment of 11,984 metric tonnes, with 4,583 MT already discharged to the Petroleum Warehousing and Storage Ltd. in the past two days, and the remainder being offloaded at Tema Oil Refinery and Ridge depots—expected to finish by July 25.
  • Maintenance on the ATK jetty pipeline was completed, further enhancing fuel security; the Ministry emphasized there is “no cause for alarm” and urged the public to disregard false reports.
  • Deputy Minister Richard Gyan-Mensah also engaged with petroleum sector stakeholders and the Ghana Airport Company to ensure stable supply coordination.

Expert Insight

  • Airline operator PassionAir had raised the alarm over potential disruptions, referencing a NOTAM warning of fuel shortages between July 23–27—but the Ministry’s statement addressed and resolved those concerns.
  • Confirmed: The Energy Ministry officially refutes claims of ATK fuel shortage in Ghana.
  • Evidence: A large fuel shipment is being unloaded, and systems are in place to ensure continuous availability for flights.
  • Impact: The reassurance removes immediate concerns about potential flight disruptions tied to fuel scarcity.

Ghana to Declare 21 Marine Protected Areas Starting at Greater Cape Three Points

Ghana is preparing to declare 21 coastal communities as Marine Protected Areas in a major step toward restoring marine biodiversity and strengthening fisheries management. The first declaration is expected to take place at Greater Cape Three Points in the Western Region. Once designated, fishing activities within the protected zones will be restricted to allow depleted fish stocks to recover. Part of the Global 30×30 Target The move forms part of Ghana’s commitment to the global 30×30 target, which calls for the protection of at least 30 percent of the world’s land and ocean areas by 2030. The goal falls under Target 3 of the Global Biodiversity Framework and has been adopted by more than 190 countries. Despite the widespread commitment, progress remains slow. Since 2022, global reviews show that only about 2.9 percent of the ocean is fully or highly […]

Dorcas Affo-Toffey Builds New Classroom Block for Jomoro School

More than 400 pupils and teachers at Nana Avoh Nwiah Basic School in the Jomoro Municipality had for years been forced to teach and learn in a deteriorating wooden structure widely described by residents as a death trap. The unsafe building discouraged attendance and affected enrolment, as some parents feared for their children’s safety. Inside, there were no proper desks. Pupils sat on backless benches placed on dusty, uncemented floors. When heavy rains fell, teachers often shut the school because of the leaking, tattered roof. On days it remained open, more than 400 pupils were squeezed into a single classroom considered slightly safer than the rest of the structure. The open design of the building created constant danger. Teachers recalled an incident where a snake fell from the roof into a classroom during lessons. The situation was worsened by poor […]
